ANDRADE CHALLENGES OMEGA, LAREDO KID, DEONNA PURRAZZO, VILLANO III, SAM ADONIS, CHESSMAN & MORE: AAA REY DE REYES 2021 REPORT

By Oliver Taylor on 2021-05-01 22:52:00

Lucha Libre AAA World Wide held its Rey de Reyes show today at an outdoor venue in Cholula, Puebla.

The show featured five matches with surprises, championship implications and the event’s namesake match; Rey de Reyes.

The full card was:

Aramis vs. Arez vs. Dinastía vs. Látigo vs. Toxin
• AAA Latin America Championship: Octagon Jr. vs. Taurus vs. ‘X’
• AAA Reina de Reinas Championship: Chik Tormenta vs. Faby Apache vs. Flammer vs. Lady Maravilla vs. Lady Shani vs. ‘X’
• Rey de Reyes: Abismo Negro Jr. vs. Aerostar vs. Drago vs. Hijo del Vikingo vs. Laredo Kid vs. Murder Clown vs. Myzteziz Jr. vs. Texano Jr.
• No Disqualifications: Chessman and ‘X’ vs. Pagano and Psycho Clown

Látigo defeated Aramis, Arez, Dinastía and Toxin in a frantically paced opener which felt like it was in hyperdrive from start to finish. The match really showed the brilliant athleticism of all five competitors and is certainly worth seeking out.

As per the stipulation of the match, Látigo is next in line to challenge Laredo Kid for the AAA World Cruiserweight Championship. The champion came out after the bout to offer Látigo a handshake, but the winner smugly declined.

Villano III Jr. made his surprise return to AAA in the AAA Latin America Championship match, but was seemingly knocked out after an errant kick from Octagon Jr. very early into that bout and needed assistance to walk to the backstage area. Octagon Jr. and Taurus briefly wrestled a de facto singles match until Villano III Jr. returned to the ring and the bout continued as a three-way.

Villano III Jr. did not seem to be suffering from any lingering effects after his return, both executing and taking a variety of high impact moves, perhaps indicating he was only briefly knocked out from the kick and able to continue after regaining consciousness. Taurus eventually pinned Villano III Jr. to win the vacant AAA Latin America Championship.

Taurus celebrated with his Los Mercenarios stablemate Texano Jr. after the match. Fans might recognise Taurus from Impact Wrestling, where he recently debuted as a member of the Decay faction.

Speaking of Impact, Deonna Purrazzo made a surprise appearance to join the commentary team for the six-way AAA Reina de Reinas Championship elimination match. Purrazzo said Konnan invited her to the show and had given her permission to challenge the winner of the match.

Purrazzo was not the only surprise though, as the mystery entrant in the AAA Reina de Reinas Championship match was Sexy Star. However, it was not Dulce García (infamously known for legitimating injuring Rosemary at Triplemanía XXV in 2017) under the mask. The new Sexy Star is believed to be portrayed by Hija de Gatubela.

Faby Apache last eliminated Chik Tormenta to win the match and the vacant AAA Reina de Reinas Championship. Purrazzo entered the ring and challenged Apache to a match at this year’s Triplemanía with both the AAA Reina de Reinas Championship and Impact Knockouts Championship on the line. Apache accepted and Purrazzo applied a Fujiwara Armbar.

The AAA Reina de Reinas Championship was previously held by Taya Valkyrie, who has since signed with WWE and wrestles as Franky Monet on the NXT brand.

Wrestlers entered the Rey de Reyes match every 60 seconds. Competitors had to be eliminated over the top rope until two wrestlers reminded, where the winner had to win by pinfall or submission. The full order of entry was:

1. Hijo del Vikingo
2. Laredo Kid
3. Myzteziz Jr.
4. Abismo Negro Jr.
5. Texano Jr.
6. Murder Clown
7. Drago
8. Aerostar

Laredo Kid and Texano Jr. were the final two competitors. Rey Escorpión attempted to interfere in the match to help his Los Mercenarios stablemate Texano Jr. but accidentally struck him with a metal sheet, paving the way for Laredo Kid to hit the Laredo Fly and win the Rey de Reyes.

Sam Adonis made his AAA debut as Chessman’s mystery partner in the no disqualifications main event against Pagano and Psycho Clown. Adonis is the younger brother of WWE commentator Corey Graves and has worked for companies such as Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) in Mexico, Warrior Wrestling in America and All Japan Pro Wrestling in Japan.

The match ended without much clarity, likely to be officially ruled as a no contest after Pagano and Psycho Clown were attacked by Diamante Azul (who was wrestling on CMLL broadcasts as recently as weeks ago) and Puma King. It quickly became clear that the two invaders were aligned with Adonis.

As the beatdown was happening, a vignette from former WWE superstar Andrade aired. He said he has two goals in AAA: to wrestle Psycho Clown and face Kenny Omega for the AAA Mega Championship. Andrade then challenged Omega to a match for the title at this year’s Triplemanía.

The show ended with Diamante Azul, Puma King and Adonis holding a shirt with “La Empresa” on it, giving an apparent name to the new faction seemingly led by Andrade.

No date has been given for this year’s Triplemanía yet, but barring any major setbacks due to the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic, one could reasonably expect the show to take place around August or September with Apache versus Purrazzo in a double title match and Andrade challenging Omega for the AAA Mega Championship.

The full results from Rey de Reyes were:

• Látigo def. Aramis, Arez, Dinastía & Toxin
• AAA Latin America Championship: Taurus def. Octagon Jr. & Villano III Jr.
• AAA Reina de Reinas Championship: Faby Apache def. Chik Tormenta, Flammer, Lady Maravilla, Lady Shani & Sexy Star
• Rey de Reyes: Laredo Kid def. Abismo Negro Jr., Aerostar, Drago, Hijo del Vikingo, Murder Clown, Myzteziz Jr. and Texano Jr.
• No Disqualifications: Chessman and Sam Adonis vs. Pagano and Psycho Clown – No Contest

The show aired live on Space TV in Mexico. For international viewers, the show will be uploaded on Facebook and YouTube at a later date.
