YOUNG ROCK ON NBC RECAP

YOUNG ROCK -  “Good vs. Great”

The Straight Line with Randall Park on Presidential Watch 2032. Randall sits down with candidate Johnson. The Rock sips some Teremana tequila as Randall drinks an expired  pear cider. Park asks The Rock if he feels like getting this far in the race is a win and The Rock says “no way”.  This weeks flashback is back to his college football days in Miami.

It’s the NFL draft hosted by ESPN’s Chris Berman and we see it’s actually Dwayne daydreaming that he was the first overall selection in the 1995 draft. Teammate Kevin Patrick wakes him up as defensive lineman meetings are starting. Warren Sapp comes in the room and informs Dwayne that he’s converting to lineman this season and he’s taking his job. Coach Dennis Erickson let’s the guys know that there will be a lot of agents and scouts coming to the games and not to accept gifts from them.

A practice montage shows how dominant a player Sapp was and we see his pro football resume. Super Bowl Champion, 7 x Pro Bowler, All Decade Team, Hall of Famer...

Johnson loses his starting D-Line job to Sapp, learning he’s good but not great.

Ata is at work trying to sell cruises and Rocky calls to give her an update on the Miami game. Dwayne is on the sidelines.

The Hurricanes wins the national championship but it’s an empty feeling since Dwayne only played one down.

The family goes out for dinner and Dwayne promises that next season will be better. He works extra hard next offseason while working with Ata. He starts to see his dreams slipping away. He works hard but encounters a freshman linebacker named Ray Lewis who will also go onto a legendary NFL career of Super Bowl titles and a Hall of Fame selection. Again, Johnson is good but not great.

We get to see some archival footage of Dwayne’s playing days.  He meets with Coach Erickson, asking him if there is any buzz regarding the draft. Erickson says he’s the hardest worker on the team and that he wishes he had more guys like him. Erickson asks if Dwayne has ever thought about coaching. This is a let down. Dewey commiserates with his teammates and learns that Coach doesn’t talk to them the same way.

The Rock explains to Randall that hard work doesn’t always pay off when some people are more naturally gifted. As he didn’t ever get a starting job and soon enough his college playing days were over without the promise of an NFL career.

Warren Sapp wins all the big team awards and Dwayne wins “Scholar of the Year”.

Dewey isn’t a guaranteed NFL draft pick and Rocky can’t book wrestling matches anymore. Rocky is now training wrestlers and it’s there that Grandma Lia tells Dewey about the High Chief and how he out worked everyone in the business because people told him he was too small, too dumb so he won the championship and started his own promotion.

Despite the setbacks, Dwayne promises Ata that he’s going to make it and he’ll impress at the NFL combine in hope of getting drafted. But that’s a story for another day.

Young Rock airs Tuesday nights on NBC or On Demand.
