Young Rock - "A Lady Named Star Search"
Universal Backlot - 2032, site of the first Presidential Debate.
The Rock’s campaign advisor tells DJ that polling says people are concerned about his lack of foreign policy experience. The Rock asks her if it’s all right if he tells his opponent that he’s going to “check in that little candy ass into the Smackdown Hotel.” She gets nervous and walks away.
Cut to the debate stage with Senator Taft and they are asked what they want their legacies to be. Taft points out that he is related to former President Taft and The Rock points out that President Taft the only POTUS to ever get stuck in his bathtub. The Rock says his legacy is that he comes from a long line of fighters. He goes into a story about his family starting with Grandma Lia.
Hawaii 1982...
Lia takes a meeting with an insurance man Lonnie McGill, who wants to retire and get into the wrestling business. She believes Lonnie was working with Greg Yao, trying to steal her wrestlers.
Little Dewey is on the beach and he wants a boogie board.
At the Johnson’s hotel, Lia has left Rocky a basket of fruits as she tries to make amends for thinking Rocky would leave her promotion. Ata is annoyed at the red light blinking on the phone. Rocky informs her that he got a call from Vince McMahon about coming back to New York and tagging up with Tony Atlas. Ata says, “Tag Team Champion sounds good” and Rocky replies “Star Search champion also sounds good”. Ata realizes she’s sitting on a surfing magazine and Dewey says “oh that’s where it went”. Ata tells him he’s too young to surf.
Ata has a hotel employee explain that the phone isn’t broken but that she has a message. It’s from Star Search inviting her to an in person audition and she’s going to LA. Rocky will watch Dewey alone for the first time.
Ata takes the family out for dinner before she leaves as a way to get Lia and Rocky to talk. Dewey shows Grandma his new boogie board, “Tanya." Lia and Rocky are going to use the time to plot their revenge against Yao. They smash watermelons all over his car and decapitate the statues in his garden.
Dewey is out in the water. A kid named Sebi swims up and tells him a kid named Kenny wants to fight him. Dewey walks up to Kenny who tells him he’s in his surf spot and that he wants $50 and his board. Dewey tells him no and that they’ll have to fight. Unfortunately Kenny has lots of back up and they take “Tanya.” Dewey gets home and explains it all to Rocky who gets pissed. Rocky tells him as soon as mom leaves they’ll take care of the problem.
Lia’s assistant informs her Yao called and that he wants to end their beef. When they talk she tells, Yao if he wants to run shows everything goes through her, the wrestlers, the ring and the venues plus a $5000 booking fees and if he doesn’t like it, he needs to get out of the business. Yao leaves and goes to a parking garage. He parks next to a van and gets in.
Ata is leaving for LA and gives instructions and goodbyes to Rocky & Dewey. Rocky kind of freaks out Ata when he says they’ll be living the dream. Him touring with WWF and her touring as a singer. She can only think of Dewey as she leaves. When she’s gone, Rocky tells Dewey “take me to those kids”.
They show up at the beach and Rocky says his son will fight any of them one on one but eight on one is what punks do. He scolds them for pulling a knife (which was a little Swiss Army knife) and pulls out a switchblade. Dewey retrieves “Tanya” and they leave.
Ata ends up realizing she doesn’t want to tour and leave Dewey alone if Rocky is wrestling and she doesn’t make her trip to LA. She returns home. Rocky gives Lia the yellow cowboy boots he took from Greg. We realize Yao is working with the FBI on building an extortion charge against Lia.
Back at the debate, The Rock says he comes from a family of fighters and he will fight for the American people.
Young Rock airs Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC or On Demand
