ROMAN REIGNS DISCUSSES WRESTLEMANIA, WHETHER HE CAN BEAT THE ROCK, HIS BATTLE WITH LEUKEMIA AND MORE ON THE TODAY SHOW

By Mike Johnson on 2021-04-11 09:15:00

WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns appeared on NBC's The Today Show to promote Wrestlemania 38 on 4/8, including tonight's main event against Daniel Bryan and Edge.

Reigns, speaking with Craig Melvin, Reigns said stepping through the curtain is a like a "Superman Moment" where you become someone else.  They noted he's become one of the leading men in WWE, following The Rock.  When asked who would win that match, Reigns said it would be him.  He said maybe a few years ago, it might have been the Rock but now, "nobody stands a chance."

When asked if The Rock was too old to beat him, he laughed those weren't his words.

They noted that at just 22 years old with a baby on the way, Reigns was diagnosed with leukemia but beat that cancer and joined WWE.  He was in remission for 11 years.  It was noted one of the most dramatic memories in recent WWE memories is announcing his leukemia had returned.  Reigns said that when performing, fans become some used to knowing those characters that they didn't know of his history fighting the disease.  He said it was a difficult period.  There were two choices - remain in the character or tell the truth and let the fans know who he really is.  He let them know what was really going on.

Reigns beat cancer in four months and announced he was in remission.  He comes back but the pandemic hits, so he steps away again.  Reigns said he felt it was the smart decision not just for himself for his family.  They noted Reigns returned when he felt it was safe to do so, complete with a "new villain character" and won the Universal title.  Reigns said he's ready every day of the week.  He's been conditioned to be ready and that's what you need to be the top guy in WWE.

After the segment, the hosts talked about Wrestlemania joining Peacock and mentioned memories growing up watching Wrestlemania 3.  Al Roker responded that he was old enough to remember Gorgeous George.
