A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO WRESTLING

By Kendall Jenkins on 2021-03-24 14:32:00

Wrestling is a popular, competitive combat sport where two competitors typically meet on a padded mat and take holds from a standing position. The struggle between them involves throws, joint locks, takedowns, pins and various other grappling holds. Officials make sure that the fight is clean and that there is no use of violence, and the emphasis is on technique and strategy. The sport is kept purely in the form of a player establishing purely physical dominance over the opponent while observing the sport's prescribed rules.

The match usually has wrestlers competing in three two-minute periods where there is a 30 second rest period between every two-minute periods. The match either results in a player pinning down their opponent or outscoring the opponent in various ways.

The match is typically held in a venue where a particular matted area is allocated. The match will have two competitors, a referee, a judge and a mat chairman. There will also be seating arrangements for the audience.

A match is won when the wrestler either pins the opponent or presses the opponent’s shoulder blades or back to the mat for at least two seconds. Usually, a wrestler and their opponent are given two different coloured bands like red and green, worn on their ankles for easy identification and recording scores during the match.

A wrestler scores one point when they escape from the opponent and two points when they manage to gain control over the opponent through reversal. A wrestler can also score points by putting the opponent in a near pinning position where their shoulders are within 4 inches of the mat. At this point, the referee starts counting seconds from 1 to 5. At the 5th second, the wrestler that managed to pin their opponent gets three points.

There can also be a one-minute overtime period after a tie, where both wrestlers again start from their neutral positions. If the match is tied even after overtime, then 30 more seconds are added to the match.

A brief overview of the points system:

Fall (Pin) – 6 points

Technical Fall – 5 points

Takedown – 2 points

Reversal – 2 points

Escape – 1 point

Illegal Hold – 1 point

Technical violation – 1 point

Technical violations can include incorrect starting position, stalling, going off the mat or leaving the mat without the referee’s permission. They can also involve being unequipped or using illegal equipmentor being unready for the match. When a wrestler grabs the opponent's headgear or uses unnecessary roughness that can possibly be hazardous to the opponent’s well-being, such flagrant misconduct and unsportsmanlike conduct result in deductions and reflect poorly on the player.

The first two times of a wrestler being penalized give the opponent one point. The third time a wrestler is penalized, the opponent receives two points. When a wrestler is penalized for the fourth time, it results in their disqualification.

Holds like locking or overlapping hands, fingers or arms around the opponent’s body or legs are illegal. They are primarily illegal when they do not fulfill the criteria for a near pin. The criteria also include when the opponent isn’t standing or hasn’t been lifted or even grabbing the mat or headgear, or singlet will deduce points and, subsequently, may result in disqualification.

Preparation for Wrestling

Endurance training - Wrestling on the mat usually demands a good degree of physical and mental competency. And so, it is essential to discipline oneself and engage in proper training. Professional wrestling requires a lot of endurance which is the capacity to withstand the intensity of the sport. For endurance, the aspirant for wrestling will have to do regular cardio such as running or exercise bike riding at a moderate intensity for at least 40 minutes. Without developing your endurance capacity, your body will not meet the highly demanding nature of the sport.

Developing flexibility and agility - A wrestler will have to be spry and quick in their movements. Therefore, adequate stretching exercises before and after every practice session is an absolute necessity. It is important to stretch the hamstrings, glutes, hips, lower back, neck and quads. Without adequate stretching, you may very soon experience muscle tightness and pain. Exercises like high knee drills, side-to-side drills, lateral plyometric jumps, and so on significantly contribute to flexibility.

Meeting your nutrition needs -Having a diet designed to meet the requirements for wrestling is very important. It is important to talk to a dietician or a good coach and make sure that the diet considers your body type, age, gender, and the place where you live. Getting the right amount of fluids every day and staying hydrated helps greatly.

Developing strength – Strength training is an absolute must. The sport requires tremendous use of power to pin down the opponent. A good strength training program focuses on the all-round upper body and lower body development, using the various gym machines and equipment for resistance training.

Mindset – A positive, healthy attitude and a knowledge of one’s strengths is vital. A wrestler must be confident about his style, abilities and must not shy away from being competitive. The lifestyle centered around this sport requires an immense amount of will power and self-control. It is also important to stay cheerful and learn to be open to receiving the benefits of other games, such as playing https://www.slotsformoney.com and other casino or arcade games.

Good wrestling equipment – A player must be equipped with headgear, good shoes, knee pads and a mouthguard. Because of the nature of the sport, having protective gear is a necessity.

Staying healthy – A wrestler must always make sure to exercise self-care and take care of their skin. Wrestling is a sweaty sport, so it is important to maintain good hygiene and cleanliness to avoid skin diseases. Injuries are often unavoidable. It is important to undergo routine medical checks from a medical professional to check for a concussion or any other signs that may render a wrestler unfit to play.

In Conclusion

The nature and demands of the wrestling sport help to have good character, confidence, physical fitness and mental strength. The value of wrestling undoubtedly extends beyond the mat, making it a mighty sport and can serve as a teaching tool to instill sound principles in the youth.
