Young Rock - Check Your Head

 

Young Athletes with Kenny Smith interview of Presidential Candidate Dwayne Johnson. They discuss his time at University of Miami. 

Tampa 1990 - Rocky & Atta sell their cleaning business and move to Tampa. Grandma Maivia ends up losing everything, becoming homeless and gets deported to Samoa. 

We get a montage of celebrities and high profile players who went to and participated in the practices there. Uncle Luke (2 Live Crew), Cheech Marin. DWayne and Russ Mayfield get invited to a party at his place. We cut to DWayne getting ready for the party and he’s wearing the infamous turtleneck, chain &  fanny pack outfit we all know and love. 

Roomate “What’s in the pack”

Dwayne “Pop Tarts and condoms”

In unison “Eat it and beat it”

Atta misses and is worried about Dewey. Rocky says they should take advantage of their empty nest situation by dating and having fun together.

Dwayne is at Uncle Luke’s party and meets Michael Irvin. Irvin introduces him to some girls but Dwayne makes a fool out of himself.  He has an inspirational conversation about being successful with Luke. Dwayne sends Rocky & Atta a big console TV because he feels good about his future.

At practice the next day he gets knocked on his ass. At the doctor they find out all the ligaments in his shoulder are torn and he’s out for the season. Coach says he can redshirt him so he doesn’t lose his scholarship.

Atta gets the news and wants Dwayne to come home. Rocky encourages him to stay and be part of the team. Unfortunately Dwayne loses his drive for practices and classes and spirals into a depression. DWayne and his roommate go out to the club but he gets humiliated by a small guy who challenges him to a fight (but is a judo champ) and by Uncle Luke who won’t get him into the club. Dwayne takes the bus home to Atta & Rocky.

Atta is feeding Dwayne and wants to talk about his classes but he ignores her. We get a montage of him eating his feelings and becoming a couch potato. Rocky tries to snap him out of it and wants him to pick out some activities the family can do together. Atta knows something is wrong but in 1990, depression wasn’t widely discussed. Rocky tries to get Dwayne to the gym and get back into life. Dwayne finally tells Rocky what actually happened at Miami. Rocky gives him a heart to heart and encourages Dwayne not to give up on his dream of being a successful college football player and student.

Flash forward. We go back to Rock and Kenny on the set and they encourage the viewers to talk to someone if they’re feeling down.

Flashback to Atta thanking Rocky for helping Dwayne. 

Flash forward back to Dwayne talking to his real former coach at Miami. He congratulates him on working hard and being a success.

Young Rock airs Tuesday at 8pm on NBC or On Demand.
