YOUNG ROCK DEBUTS ON NBC THIS TUESDAY

By Mike Johnson on 2021-02-12 09:30:00

The first episode of Young Rock will debut this Tuesday at 8:30 PM EST on NBC.

Titled Working the Gimmick, the official synopsis for the episode notes: "As Dwayne Johnson runs for president in 2032, he reflects on his life that's shaped him into the man he is today, from growing up in a resilient family surrounded by wrestling icons, to navigating rebellious teen years, to playing NCAA football."

Previously NBC promotional material for the comedy series notes, "Young Rock” focuses on different chapters of Dwayne Johnson’s life. From growing up in a strong and resilient family, to being surrounded by the wild characters of his professional wrestling family, to playing football at the University of Miami, the show will explore the crazy rollercoaster that has shaped Dwayne into the man he is today and the larger-than-life characters he’s met along the way."

The series stars Dwayne Johnson, Joseph Lee Anderson, Stacey Leilua, Adrian Groulx, Bradley Constant, Uli Latukefu, Ana Tuisila, Fasitua Amosa and John Tui.

The cast traveled to Australia last year in advance of filming.  Production officially began in late October 2020. The show filmed at Screen Queensland Studios as well as additional locations in and around Brisbane and South East Queensland, Australia.

NBC ordered the series in January 2020 for an 11 episode first season with Johnson appearing on all episodes.

"We’re going to find young Rock wreaking havoc in the streets of Hawaii, when I was a teenager, getting arrested seemingly every single week, doing things I shouldn’t have been doing, but still a good kid. Then we got evicted off the island, and moved to, of all places Nashville, Tennessee, where I continued to get in trouble,” Johnson told Deadline.com when the series was picked up in January 2020.

“Just imagine me at 15 in downtown Nashville, listening to honky tonk, buying my first car from a crackhead for $70 – I did talk him down so I was a pretty good negotiator. Then we go into high school years and then I became University of Miami football star, if you will, until I got beat out of my position by a guy by the name of Warren Sapp, who went on to become one of the greatest defensive tackles of all time."

The series is written by Fresh Off the Boat Creator Nahnatchka Khan and Jeff Chaing, who wrote the pilot script utilized by Khan and Johnson in their pitch to NBC.  NBC immediately ordered the concept straight to series.

Executive producers on the series include Khan, Johnson, Chiang, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, Brian Gewirtz and Jennifer Carreras. The show is being produced by Universal Television, Seven Bucks and Khan’s Fierce Baby Productions.
