New Japan Pro Wrestling
New Japan Pro Wrestling held the second night of The New Beginning in Hiroshima today in Hiroshima Sun Plaza Hall.
The full results were:
• DOUKI, Taichi and Zack Sabre Jr. def. Gabriel Kidd, Yota Tsuji and Yuya Uemura
• Master Wato, SHO and Tomoaki Honma def. El Desperado, Minoru Suzuki and Yoshinobu Kanemaru
• BUSHI, Hiromu Takahashi and Tetsuya Naito def. El Phantasmo, Taiji Ishimori and Yujiro Takahashi
• Dick Togo and EVIL vs. Kazuchika Okada and Toru Yano – Double Countout
• Kazuchika Okada def. EVIL via DQ
• NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Championships: Hirooki Goto, Tomohiro Ishii and YOSHI-HASHI (c) def. Jay White, Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa
• IWGP Heavyweight Championship and IWGP Intercontinental Championship: Kota Ibushi (c) def. SANADA
EVIL and Kazuchika Okada wrestled an impromptu singles match but it ended in disqualification. The feud has been building since New Year Dash!! last month and the two will presumably have a marquee match at one of the Castle Attack shows in Osaka-j? Hall on either February 27 or 28.
YOSHI-HASHI pinned Tanga Loa to retain the NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Championships for his team, their third defense. He and Hirooki Goto challenged for the Guerrillas of Destiny’s IWGP IWGP Tag Team Championships.
Kota Ibushi made his second defense of the IWGP Heavyweight Championship and IWGP Intercontinental Championship against SANADA. Tetsuya Naito came out afterwards to challenge Ibushi to an IWGP Intercontinental Championship match as Naito does not want Ibushi to unify the two titles.
Pro Wrestling NOAH
Pro Wrestling NOAH will make its long-awaited return to the historic Nippon Budokan for its Destination 2021 show tomorrow.
The full card is:
• Akitoshi Saito vs. Kinya Okada
• Atsushi Kotoge, Daiki Inaba and Yasutaka Yano vs. Hajime Ohara, Kai Fujimura and YO-HEY
• Masaaki Mochizuki and Masato Tanaka vs. Mohammed Yone and Shuhei Taniguchi
• Haoh, Katsuhiko Nakajima, Manabu Soya, Masa Kitamiya, Nioh and Tadasuke vs. Kazunari Murakami, Kazushi Sakuraba, Kazuyuki Fujita, Kendo Kashin, NOSAWA Rongai and Takashi Sugiura
• GHC Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championships: HAYATA and Yoshinari Ogawa (c) vs. Ikuto Hidaka and Kotaro Suzuki
• GHC Junior Heavyweight Championship: Daisuke Harada (c) vs. Seiki Yoshioka
• Jun Akiyama and Naomichi Marufuji vs. Kaito Kiyomiya and Yoshiki Inamura
• GHC National Championship: Kenoh (c) vs. Masakatsu Funaki
• GHC Heavyweight Championship: Go Shiozaki (c) vs. Keiji Mutoh
The 12-man tag team match between Kongoh and Sugiura-gun will serve as a preview for Katsuhiko Nakajima and Masa Kitamiya’s GHC Tag Team Championships challenge against Kazushi Sakuraba and Takashi Sugiura at Great Voyage 2021 in Yokohama on March 7.
HAYATA and Yoshinari Ogawa will attempt their third defense of the GHC Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championships against Ikuto Hidaka and Kotaro Suzuki.
HAYATA and Ogawa betrayed Suzuki on October 28 last year. Suzuki recruited a mysterious masked wrestler called Salvaje de Oriente to help him against HAYATA and Ogawa, but Salvaje de Oriente soon betrayed Suzuki as well to align with HAYATA and Ogawa and unmasked himself to reveal Yuya Susumu.
Further outnumbered by his former stable, Suzuki reluctantly agreed to accept the aide of NOSAWA Rongai and his associate Hidaka.
NOAH’s junior heavyweight division is renowned for its unpredictability and volatility. Another swerve, betrayal or debut would not be at all out of place on tomorrow’s show.
Speaking of junior heavyweight wrestlers, Daisuke Harada will attempt his third defense of the GHC Junior Heavyweight Championship against Seiki Yoshioka.
Harada’s most recent defense was against Hajime Ohara on January 10 and Yoshioka challenged him afterwards.
Jun Akiyama will return to NOAH for the first time since September 2019 to team with Naomichi Marufuji against Kaito Kiyomiya and Yoshiki Inamura. It will be only Akiyama’s fourth appearance in NOAH since leaving the company at the end of 2012.
The bout is very much a generational clash between two of NOAH’s greatest wrestlers of the 2000s and two young stars who are hailed as the future of the company. That is not to say either Akiyama or Marufuji cannot still compete at an extremely high level because both men can, as will likely be proved tomorrow.
It is worth remembering Akiyama is also set to challenge Tetsuya Endo for the KO-D Openweight Championship at DDT Pro-Wrestling’s Kawasaki Strong 2021 show on February 14.
Kenoh will attempt his fifth defense of the GHC National Championship against Masakatsu Funaki.
Kenoh’s most recent defense was against Kazunari Murakami on January 23 and Funaki challenged him afterwards.
Interestingly, there seems to be a growing trend of former mixed martial artists challenging for the title. Prior to Murakami, Sakuraba faced Kenoh last December.
It remains to be seen if the GHC National Championship becomes more geared towards shoot-style matches between wrestlers with backgrounds in combat sports. Kenoh himself trained in Nippon Kempo and became a multi-time champion in the sport, which is how Jinsei Shinzaki scouted him and signed him to Michinoku Pro Wrestling to begin his professional wrestling career in 2007.
Go Shiozaki will attempt his seventh defense of the GHC Heavyweight Championship against Keiji Mutoh in the main event.
Shiozaki’s most recent defense was against Sugiura on December 6 last year and Mutoh challenged him afterwards.
Mutoh, 58, would become the third ever person to hold the GHC Heavyweight Championship, IWGP Heavyweight Championship and Triple Crown Heavyweight Championship if he were to defeat Shiozaki. The only other two are Kensuke Sasaki and Yoshihiro Takayama.
Mutoh has wrestled two singles match in NOAH since the closure of Wrestle-1 last April: 27 minutes and seven seconds versus Kiyomiya last August and 13 minutes and 51 seconds last December. Shiozaki’s last three GHC Heavyweight Championship matches have lasted 51 minutes and 44 seconds versus Sugiura, 42 minutes and 35 seconds versus Nakajima and a 60-minute time limit draw versus Kenoh.
It will be interesting to see if Shiozaki and Mutoh are able to wrestle a match which can meet the incredibly high bar set throughout Shiozaki’s remarkable title reign. If were Shiozaki were to lose tomorrow, his reign would end at 405 days.
NOAH is splitting the show into two halves as a precautionary measure against COVID-19. The first half will begin at 4:30pm JST, 9:30am BST, 2:30am ET and will consist of the first four matches and the second half will begin at 5:45pm JST, 10:45am BST, 3:45am ET and will consist of the last five matches.
The only way to watch the first half of the show will be on pay-per-view via ABEMA and FITE. ABEMA’s pay-per-view broadcast is only available in Japan while FITE’s is available worldwide. Both broadcasts will show both halves of the show.
The second half of the show will air on the WRESTLE UNIVERSE streaming service and for free worldwide on ABEMA.
Just to clarify, there are two separate ABEMA broadcasts. The first ABEMA broadcast is on pay-per-view (only available in Japan) and will air the entire show. The second ABEMA broadcast will be available to view for free worldwide but will only air the second half of the show.
