NICK BOCKWINKEL VS. BRUISER BRODY FOR AWA TITLE, AUSTIN IDOL, THE SHEIK, JERRY LAWLER & MORE: CLASSIC ALL-STAR WRESTLING DEBUT EPISODE REPORT

By Mike Johnson on 2021-02-11 00:50:00

The first episode of Classic All-Star Wrestling debuted tonight on Eleven Sports HD, hosted by Adam Parsons.  The new series features content from the Jarrett/Parsons Productions' library, which has featured a Roku channel for some time.  The Jarrett involved here is legendary Memphis promoter Jerry Jarrett.

Featured on the episode:

The Sheik vs. Tom Parsons from the Detroit territory in 1969.  This was very much a Sheik squash as he manhandled and worked over Jones with a very unique (for 2021) hammerlock.  Whipper Billy Watson tried to make the save in street clothes but was attacked and beaten down on the outside. Watson made his own comeback and they brawled to the back.  The scene was especially wild with The Sheik's manager left in the ring with fans on the outside trying to take shots at him.

The Assassins vs. Jerry Lawler & Austin Idol from The Mid-South Coliseum in 1983.  This was highlights with The Assassins working over Lawler, who was bleeding.  They showed Lawler fighting back against a two on one disadvantage and making the hot tag to Idol.  Idol cleaned house as they went to commercial.  Just quick highlights.  No finish.

AWA World Champion Nick Bockwinkel with Bobby Heenan vs. Bruiser Brody with Lou Thesz  as the guest referee from the Southwest Championship Wrestling promotion aka The San Antonio territory in 1982.  This was joined in progress with Bockwinkel working over Brody with a head scissor on the mat.    Brody fought his way out and worked over the champion with right hands.  He grabbed a bearhug with Bockwinkel desperately trying to fight his way out of it in a way that again would be totally unique today.   They ended up in the ropes.  Bockwinkel was able to take Brody back to the mat with the scissors.  This feels like they were going for a long bout.  Brody ended up going through the ropes and being sent to the floor.   Bockwinkel drilled him into the ring apron but Brody made his way back to the ring.  Bockwinkel worked him over in the corner but Brody began firing back with right hands.  Brody finally gained control and tossed Bockwinkel to the floor.  Brody followed and tossed him into the announcer's table.    Bockwinkel is tossed into the ring and Brody comes off the top with a big fist.  Bockwinkel sold this as if he was out on his rear end and was just tremendous.  Brody nailed the boot but Bockwinkel escaped at one.

After a commercial break, Brody continued controlling Bockwinkel and went for a big slam but Heenan grabbed him.  Brody pursued him around the ring then returned and drilled Bockwinkel with another slam.  Brody nailed a big knee but Heenan interfered to stop the pinfall.  More chasing Bobby.  Bockwinkel was tossed to the floor.  Heenan was caught and tossed as well.  Brody grabbed a chair as Thesz tried to maintain the peace.  Brody went to use it and Thesz was knocked to the mat.  Bockwinkel fled the ring.  Amazingly, Thesz gets up and only removes the chair.  Bockwinkel and Heenan ran for the locker room and were DQ's for interference.  Big pop for Thesz raising Brody's hand.

A short but fun collection of old material featuring a lot of in-ring physicality that is missing from today's pro wrestling as it has evolved into more of an entertainment form.

They announced Magnum TA, Dusty Rhodes and The Four Horsemen for next week.
