The first major WWE pay-per-view of 2021 is behind us with Edge and Bianca Belair the stars of this year’s Royal Rumble.
47-year-old Edge became the second-oldest winner of the famous 30-man battle royal. In the process he became a two-time winner, following his first success all the way back in 2010.
The R-rated Superstar was making his return for the first time since tearing his bicep at Backlash in June 2020 in the Greatest Wrestling Match Ever versus Randy Orton that lasted almost 45 minutes.
Edge now has a WWE title match of his choice at the granddaddy of them all, WrestleMania 37, at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, Florida on April 10-11.
Roman Reigns is the current holder of the WWE Universal Championship following his successful defence in a Last Man Standing match versus Kevin Owens at last month’s pay-per-view.
It’s difficult to see the Tribal Chief losing his title between now and WrestleMania and could lead to a match between Edge and Reigns at the biggest event of the year.
Many would expect Reigns to retain in a matchup versus Edge, particularly with the big push he’s getting alongside Paul Heyman. Rumours suggest that it could lead to a rematch versus Brock Lesnar later in the year.
SummerSlam would be an option for such a superstar as huge as Lesnar to come back – the second biggest WWE event of the year. It would be the perfect storm – Heyman’s new client versus Heyman’s previous client. That event is set to take place in August as it has done for the past 22 years.
Before that, one match that will be guaranteed in the coming months is Bianca Belair in a title shot. Belair entered the women’s Royal Rumble at number 3 in January, outlasting every entrant before eliminating Rhea Ripley to earn her title shot at WrestleMania.
The self-proclaimed EST; the strongest, fastest, toughest and best superstar on the female roster has not held any gold in WWE since debuting in NXT three years ago. We expect her to go on and lift a title with this opportunity. We’re not the only ones including this in our Wrestlemania 37 predictions either.
Will Belair go for Sasha Banks’ SmackDown women’s title, or Asuka’s one on RAW? The former seems the more obvious choice since the Tennessee native is on the same weekly television show as the Boss.
Speaking of the women’s division, could Ronda Rousey be set for a return at this year’s WrestleMania? The Baddest Woman on the Planet hasn’t stepped foot in the squared circle for nearly two years since losing her RAW women’s title to Becky Lynch in a triple threat at the 2019 edition.
WrestleMania 37 could see a win for Seth Rollins to get him back on track following his lengthy lay-off. In fact, we can expect the first-ever NXT Champion to get him in the world title picture shortly after WrestleMania as WWE are lacking any real top full-time stars currently.
Not only do we expect Rollins to get in the title picture, but he’s a good bet to regain one of the major titles in 2021 too. He hasn’t held the Universal title since losing to Bray Wyatt at Crown Jewel on Hallowe’en 2019.
Returning in the Royal Rumble at number 29 last month, it’s only a matter of time before the three-time world champion returns to SmackDown.
One star who was missing from the Royal Rumble and that are many expecting great things from in 2021 is Keith Lee. Unfortunately, the Limitless One’s partner, Mia Yim, was struck down with Covid-19, so had to shield for a fortnight.
How much impact Lee would have made at the pay-per-view is anyone’s guess. The Texas native can expect to resume his love-hate relationship with Sheamus upon his return. Taking on the former WWE champion will help work his way up the roster, much as he did in becoming the WWE NXT champion last year.
Keith Lee has an abundance of talent, great agility for a man his size, an exciting moveset and is good on the mic. He has everything to be a future WWE world champion, but whether 2021 will come to soon for him we’ll have to wait and see.
The WWE could do with building up a superstar between now and SummerSlam and Lee would be a popular choice no doubt. Last year’s event saw ‘The Fiend’ Bray Wyatt win the Universal Championship in a Falls Count Anywhere match versus Braun Strowman.
WrestleMania can be watched live both nights on the WWE Network, which will set you back just £9.99 a month, with new members getting the first month free.
