POPULAR SPORTS IN SOUTH AMERICA

By Kendall Jenkins on 2021-01-21 08:08:00

South America as a continent is particularly well known for its massive success in soccer. While this is the most popular and most followed sport on the continent, there are a few others that tend to slip under the radar. From a sports betting perspective, there seems to be a few sports that rise above the rest in terms of betting interest and the number of bonuses on offer from the best online sportsbooks.

We will be identifying these popular sports within this article, and by following the information, you could be enjoying a whole range of bonuses before you know it, such as cricket betting India. Without wasting any more time, let’s look at what these sports are.

Soccer

Of course, this one had to make the list as number 1. Soccer is as close as it gets to be a new religion in South America! Everyone is so incredibly passionate about soccer in this part of the world that it’s almost impossible not to get involved. This is particularly true in the world of sports betting, where many South American markets are full of options when it comes to soccer. Whether it’s domestic or international soccer you’re looking for, you’ll find it all in this part of the world. Since soccer is so popular in South America, there are usually plenty of bonuses for events in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and others. Keep a close eye out for events such as the Copa America too, as this is usually home to some of the best action that the continent has to offer.

Basketball

When it comes to basketball, it doesn’t really get much bigger or more popular than the NBA in North America. This is the home of some of the best players and indeed the best teams in the world, but South American also has quite a few domestic leagues going on too. These domestic leagues are spread across multiple countries, yet for the largest prize, international teams come together and compete for the South American Basketball Championship once every two years.

Some of the more dominant teams for basketball in South America include Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Chile. These teams have historically performed the best in the South American Basketball Championships. This continent is not without interest overseas either, particularly in the NBA, with players like Ginobli and Sao Carlos all being key players in the NBA. This just goes to show, it isn’t just soccer that the South Americans are fairly good at!

Tennis

In tennis, there have been plenty of talented players emerge over the years. Think players like Guga Kuerten of Brazil, Del Potro of Argentina, and David Nalbandian, also of Argentina. These guys were legends of the game, and in South America, it is fairly noticeable how effective these players tend to be when playing on clay. South America may not have a Grand Slam on the continent, but there are plenty of lower-level events going on.

Most notably, the two key tournaments played in South America are the Rio Open and the Argentina Open. These two events regularly attract a great deal of interest from sports bettors since they are closer to home, but tennis is popular for more than just these reasons. It’s a sport that is played year-round, meaning that there is always a tournament to bet on, and there will always be some value in the markets.

Naturally, bettors from South American may want to wager on great players from this region, with players like Del Potro and Schwartzman being home favorites.

Beach Volleyball

You might not have thought it, but this is a great sport to bet on and follow from a South American perspective. With golden beaches blessing the coastline of this continent, it provides an ideal landscape for beach volleyball to flourish. It certainly does too, with tournaments held all over the continent for both male and female competitors. In fact, this is one of the few sports where unisex competition is quite dominant, with the South American Beach Volleyball circuit leading the way for major events.

It may take some time to get familiar with great players and how the scoring system works if you’ve never watched beach volleyball before. However, once you get the grasp of it, you’ll really start to appreciate the abilities and competitiveness of this classic South American sport. By simply checking out any sportsbook in South America you’ll see what events are upcoming and what bets you can make!
