During a post-Wrestle Kingdom 15 press conference, IWGP Heavyweight and IWGP Intercontinental Champion Kota Ibushi announced he wants to see the championships unified:

The storyline is that Ibushi, after defeating Jay White, said the IWGP Heavyweight Championship the strongest belt and the iWGP Intercontinental Championship the greatest belt,so unifying them will make the title the strongest and greatest.
New Japan will kick off their new year of storylines tonight with New Year's Dash, the NJPW equivalent of the first Monday Night Raw after Wrestlemania.
