In the world of sports, we all know how easy it is for professional athletes to suffer from some quite traumatic injuries. On the big screen, we have seen all kinds of excruciating sprains, strains, fractures, muscle tears, concussions and god knows what else amongst the famous athletes who push their bodies over the limit in order to reach new heights in their sport.
Within the vicious world of combat sports like boxing, MMA, kickboxing or wrestling, you’re bound to encounter an injury or two, due to how heavily these athletes impact each other in order to beat their opponents to declare themselves winners of the fight.
Particularly in the WWE, fighters come across the challenge of performing in bouts that are watched by over 800 million spectators worldwide. This tends to put a little bit of extra pressure on the professional athletes, which leads them to occasionally not place a move the right way, and end up causing devastating, disabling and even possibly career ending injuries on their opponents,or sometimes even on themselves.
Coming forth are some of the professional wrestlers who suffered the ugliest and most memorable career-ending injuries we have ever witnessed, while being broadcasted live in the dangerous all-out combat sport of the WWE:
Edge
During the epic 27th Wrestlemania show, WWE hall of famer Adam Copeland, better known by his stage name Edge, had to cut his pro wrestling career short due to a devastating neck injury he had sustained earlier on in his time on the ring. He decided to fight through the pain for a number of years, although after his final match against Alberto Del Rio, he was forced to quit wrestling for good after deciding to finally get help and being diagnosed with cervical spinal stenosis. It was a real shame to see one of the best in the business go out like that, at least he will always be remembered amongst the walls of the hall of fame.
Vince McMahon
This might just be one of the most pathetic, yet one of the most excruciating injuries caught live on television. We all know Vince McMahon as the CEO of the WWE network, one thing we know he isn’t for sure though, is a professional wrestler. One time, he tried to follow his hopes and dreams of one day making it amongst the frontlines of the pro wrestling world, when in 2005 at the Royal Rumble, McMahon decided to surprise us by coming out to join the fight out of nowhere. Vince slid into the ring at speed, but once he made it onto the ring he immediately sat back down on the ropes and ordered the fight to continue. This was due to him tearing BOTH of his quadricep muscles from the impact of his knees onto the ring while sliding inside! Not even the best online casino would have seen that one coming...
Droz
Darren Drozfov, also known as Droz, was an ex-NFL player who played for the Denver Broncos and the New York Jets, however, his peak in fame came in 1999, when he joined the WWF. Little did he know that his career would end only a year later, when he suffered an everlasting life-altering injury. During a Smackdown fight against D’lo Brown, his opponent misinterpreted a running powerbomb which led to Droz getting heavily impacted onto the ground head first and ended up fracturing two spinal discs in his neck. This devastating injury left Droz paralysed for a very large number of years. Nowadays, after almost 20 years of rehabilitation, he is still living his life on a wheelchair, although miraculously, he managed to gain some mobility in his upper body.
John Cena
We all know Cena, he’s the name and face of the game, and he’s probably one of the most popular and sought out wrestlers of his time. John Cena was fighting versus Mr. Kennedy on October 1, 2007. He had performed a hip toss on Kennedy during the fight. It was just this action that absolutely ripped John’s pectoral muscle clean off the bone. Cena was surprisingly able to play through till the match had finished, and after the match was over, he even managed to endure a surprise run-in by Randy Orton.. Cena underwent heavy pectoral surgery and was advised this would take seven months to a year for him to be able to heal and return to the ring. Against all odds, About four months later, at the 2008 Royal Rumble, Cena made a surprising comeback, where he won the Royal Rumble on his epic return.
