PREVIOUSLY ON "NEW STUDIO WARS" -

This is episode four of Northeast Wrestling's STUDIO WARS - A new (ha) weekly wrestling program that can be found on the Highspots Wrestling Network. Paul Crockett, Jon Roy & Dexter Lou are your commentary team.

Match 1: "The Air Pod God" Richard Holliday vs Thrillride

Holliday beat Chris Battle 2 weeks ago while Thrillride took Love Doug apart in last week's opener. Thrillride showing his intensity of character early. Both guys can't knock each other down. Holiday with a cheap kick gets the man down but gets caught up in taunting and eats an atomic drop. Thrillride trying to hype up the non-existent crowd and Holliday takes advantage. Ref Quinn breaks up an obvious cheaty pin attempt. Holliday with a drop toe hold and huge lariat get a close legit pin attempt. Thrillride hypes back up and hits a powerslam. Thrillride has Holliday up in a fireman's carry, looking for the finish. Holliday slips down, hits a blatant low blow, prompting the immediate disqualification.

Winner: Thrillride (by DQ)

The work itself was good but it was kinda awkward the amount of playing to the not crowd that Thrillride did here. Holliday sort of saves face by getting DQ'd but I'm curious where he goes from here on Studio Wars.

We get a flashback video to 2016 and Matt Taven having to give up the NEW title due to injury. Later in the night, Brian Anthony, as the final entrant in the battle royale for the vacant championship, wins that title after eliminating Vinny Marseglia & Sami Callihan. Warbeard Hanson comes out for an immediate title shot against Anthony. Warbeard pins him after a top rope moonsault to take that title away immediately. This looked like a cool show.

Match 2: "The Red Lion" Chris Battle vs Dustin "Flash" Waller

Waller didn't get an entrance. <begins carving tombstone> Battle lets Waller try him with holds and shoulder blocks with little effect. Maybe this was hubris, as Waller gets in an arm drag and hurracanrana. Battle dodges a springboard and hits a pop-up one-armed slam. Big suplex and Waller kicks out. Battle giving Waller a beatdown for getting those early shots in. Waller briefly escapes his clutches but gets laid out by a package backbreaker (this was coooooool). Jaw jack from Waller and he escapes to the corner. Waller hits a springboard lariart and a running shooting star press for two. Battle on the ropes and Waller ranas him down. Waller misses a 450 and Battle blasts him with a spear for the win.

Winner: Chris Battle

Waller didn't get the note that he was supposed to get squashed tonight. Like last week's Gio Galvano vs Wrecking Ball match, Waller came with a game plan that kept Battle on the defensive for more of this match than anyone expected. But Battle brought the pain when he got his chance. Good contest here.

Match 3: Gio Galvano vs Kylon King vs "Flex 2.0" Cesar Leo

King doesn't trust his opponents and gets Ref Quinn to check Gio's boot. Leo ambushes from behind and this feels like a handicap match to start. Gio bounces back to hit some flying elbows to the corner. Leo breaks the alliance with King with a rollup attempt. King with a flying crossbody and back suplex to Leo. Gio back up with a shoulder tackle but King with a back elbow. King blocking dropkicks but Gio hits a back drop for two. Gio pulled to the outside by Leo. They brawl until King dives out to them on the concrete. Uranage backbreaker, german suplex and knee strike from King and Gio barely kicks out. Leo is on wobbly legs after hitting the concrete. Gio with a springboard kick. Leo wants a Rude Awakening but Gio with a pop-up bulldog for the pin.

Winner: Gio Galvano

Fast paced match. This really was a showcase for Kylon King, who looked great in all his spots. Gio got his licks in and picked up his first win on Studio Wars after he shocked us with his performance against Wrecking Ball Legursky last week.

Throwback Match: Deonna Purrazzo vs Mandy Leon (from "Christmas in Tavenville" 2015)

This is a "Santa's Little Helper" match. A young Anthony Greene is the special guest elf/referee. The winner gets a present. Greene gives each competitor a candy cane. Deonna complains about Xmas and almost gets rolled up. Leon chases her down and hits a head scissors. Leon wants a bulldog by Deonna just plants her into the canvas. Leon gets locked into the ropes and Deonna fishhooks her with the candy cane. Leon with a near fall on a sunset flip but Deonna keeps the pressure on with strikes and stomps. Running boot to the head and shoulders in the corner. Leon finally landing some strikes back and forth with the Virtuosa. Leon gets the bulldog but Deonna kicks out. Leon powers up by wearing Anthony Greene's elf hat and plants Purrazzo's face into the canvas for three.

Winner: Mandy Leon

Mandy gets the present. What's in the box? It's mistletoe. Mandy holds it up, Greene tries to shy away but Mandy pulls him in for the smooch. Deonna was a methodical predator here but she couldn't beat the power of Christmas.

Main Event: Moshpit, Swilly O'Brien, Jay Evans vs The Haven (Shawn Knyte & Jay Onyx) & Channing Thomas

Christian Casanova joins the commentary team to support the guys in the main event slot tonight. The teams immediately start brawling. Swilly hits a famouser on Thomas. Onyx with a cutter to Swilly. Evans with an X-factor to Onyx. Fireman's Carry Knee by Knyte to Evans. Moshpit in with a jumping urange to Knyte. Thomas drops Moshpit. MUSIC HITS. It's Big Bacon Brad Hollister. He gets into Casanova's face briefly before hitting the ring to destroy everyone (except Channing Thomas who reads the room and gets out of there). Hollister clears the ring and calls out Casanova. Casanova arguing with Hollister as the show comes to a close. We're OUT OF TIIIIIIIIIME!

And that's it for episode 4. To be honest, I thought this card looked backwards on paper. Certainly Holliday and Thrillride was going to be the main. But as the show unfolded, it all made sense. And once Casanova hit the commentary table for the main event, I know where we were headed. It was beautifully old school and I was here for it. Next week, we get Casanova vs Hollister as the big payoff. Until then!
