USA STATES WITH LEGAL SPORTS BETTING

Sports betting is gaining popularity in the United States following the Supreme Court's ruling in 2018 that lifted the ban on sports betting. To date, 18 states have already made sports betting within their boundaries legal. 

The states had poised 2020 to be a great year for sports betting, but the momentum was somehow lost due to the epidemic. The gaming industry is surging ahead and holding hope for massive growth in the coming years.

For states where sports betting hasn't been legalized yet, most of them have experienced a degree of legislative activities. Below is a list of states where sports betting is legal.

Sports Betting in The USA

All states in the US require all gamblers to have reached a certain age to take part in sports betting. The minimum age varies across states for various forms of betting, but for most, the minimum age for entering the iGaming sector is 18. 

As explained at legalsportsbettingstates.com, US states with legal sports betting have age-restriction in place to ensure underage don’t take part in gambling. Now, let’s look at each state that has legalized sports betting. 

1. Nevada

The state is no longer the only one where legal sports betting is permitted. Nevada made sports betting legal in 1949, but during this period, many issues were raised with claims that sports betting was prohibited. 

The battles escalated to the Supreme Court, and finally, a resolution to officially make sports betting legal was reached in May 2018. Players should be at least 21 years to bet on sports

2. Delaware

Sports betting has been legal in Delaware since 2018. The state does not have its own online casinos, but for those wishing to place bets in physical casinos, they can choose between Harrington Raceway & Casino, Delaware Park Casino, and Dover Downs Hotel & Casino. The legal age for sports betting in this state is 21 years.

3. Mississippi

Sports betting was first launched in this state on Aug. 1, 2018, after the Mississippi Gaming Commission implemented regulations that permitted in-person betting in June the same year. The state, which allows players aged 21 years and above to wager on sport has many legal casinos where gamers 

4. New Jersey

Sports betting in this state is accessible to people who are at least 21 years since June 11, 2018. The first bet was placed in a sportsbook owned by William Hill at Monmouth Park, followed by Borgata Casino. 

5. New Mexico

Santa Ana Star Casino & Hotel was the first casino to book the first sports bet in this state on Oct. 16, 2018. The state permits Class III Gaming, which includes pari-mutuel wagering and any sports betting on boxing, football, basketball, and all other sports except games that involve in-state college teams. Gamers have to be 21 or older to access sports betting services here. 

6. West Virginia

West Virginia was the fifth American state to offer legal sports betting in the US on Aug. 30, 2018. The first casino to open its doors to the public was Hollywood Casino. Here, both online and in-person betting is legal in any of the five casinos.

7. Pennsylvania

Since mid-November, sports betting has been legal in this state. Online casinos are also allowed to operate within the state. The Hollywood Casino set the pace for sports betting in Pennsylvania when it booked the sports bet. The lawful sports betting age in the state is 21.

8. Rhode Island

On Nov. 26, 2018, the state made it possible for people here to place bets in legitimate casinos. The first bet was placed in the Twin River Casino. The other notable casino within the state is Tiverton Casino Hotel. 

9. Arkansas

The Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort opened the arena of sports betting in this state on July 1, 2019, with two other sportsbook opening shops in the following months. Southland Casino Racing and King Bingo are the other prominent casino, with the minimum betting age being 21. 

10. New York

July 16, 2019, was an important day for New York since this is when the first licit sports wagers were placed in the Rivers Casino located in Schenectady. Here, betting on in-state college games is prohibited, while online sports betting is legal.

11. Tennessee

Regulated sports betting in Tennessee launched on July 1, 2019. In this state, mobile sports wagering on the major leagues is allowed although you can’t wager on such events such as WWE. People aged 21 years and above can wager on sports in the state.

12. Iowa

Licit sports betting launched in this state on Aug.15, 2019, during which individuals aged at least 21 could place in-person bets in casinos within the state. Betting on games involving college teams is still in illegal. People can also take part in online sports betting. 

13. Oregon

Aug. 27, 2019 marked the start of sports betting in Oregon. The first bets were at Chinook Winds Casino, Lincoln City. The state is home to around 10 casinos where gamers can place their bets. Mobile sports betting is also legal in the state.

14. Indiana

People have been betting on sports legally in Indiana since Sep. 1, 2019. In this state, gamers can place bets on college teams, something that is prohibited in most states. However, betting on high school and e-Sports is illegal.

15. New Hampshire

The first legal bet was placed in New Hampshire on Dec. 30, 2019. Land-based and online casino gaming are permitted in the state and provided one has attained the minimum gambling age of 21, they can bet in any of the legitimate casinos. 

16. Illinois

Betting on sports became legal in the state on March 9, 2020. Gamers here can place bets on locations like Wrigley Field. The new law requires operators and various data providers are required to obtain a betting license. Betting on college teams or minor leagues is unlawful in Illinois. 

17. Michigan

The state is home to over 20 casinos where you can place bets. Wagering on sports was legitimized on March 9, 2020, and players in this state can place bets on a variety of sports, college contests included.

18. Montana

March 2020 officially marked the start of sports betting in Montana after the Governor, Steve Bullock signed a 28-page bill into law. Sports betting was brought into the Montana gambling industry via its lottery.
