Survivor Series is an annual professional wrestling event held in November by World Wrestling Entertainment. Due to its age, it is considered one of the "Big 4", along with WrestleMania, Royal Rumble and SummerSlam, being produced since 1987. Along with the other Big 4, since the division of brands in 2002, this PPV could unite fighters from the RAW and SmackDown, and, in 2006, to the ECW. Starting with the 2016 brand division, the event will feature wrestlers from Raw and SmackDown Live.
The first Survivor Series was created on the success of the feud between Hulk Hogan and André the Giant. The original concept of Survivor Series was to have an annual pay-per-view event that focused on tag team elimination fights (which gives the event its name). It was originally created to be a "Thanksgiving Day Event" with the first four events taking place on that day.
This event is usually characterized by having at least one match (there may be more) of elimination by teams of five against five (or sometimes four against four). These fights are generally referred to as "Traditional Survivor Series matches". The only editions of Survivor Series where there were no such fights were in the 1998 edition, since a tournament was held for the vacant WWF Championship and in the 2002 edition where the famous Elimination Chamber debuted.
In the 1997 edition, the famous "Montreal Betrayal" took place where; Shawn Michaels was fighting Bret Hart for the WWF championship. Before the fight, Bret Hart had a conversation with Vince Mcmahon as he was about to leave the company and go to the WCW competition. Hart did not want to lose the championship in front of his Canadian Terrans and they agreed that he would lose it the following night on RAW. However, Mcmahon would not risk what happened with Alundra Blaze and the women's championship (when Blaze appeared in Nitro throwing the championship into a trashcan). He planned alongside Michaels, Triple H and referee Earl Hebner; a conspiracy to make Hart lose the title. It was a plan that Michaels would perform the Sharpshooter (Hart's signature move) so that he would reinvert it and DX would intervene by attacking Hart so that the fight ended in disqualification, retaining Hart from the championship. However, now that Michaels applies the key, the referee rings the bell declaring Michaels won by submission causing the ire of the Hart family and the people who attended the event. Hart spat in Mcmahon's face and with his hand in the air wrote WCW marking the most controversial and seedy moment in the history of Survivor Series, WWE, and wrestling in general. The umpire rings the bell declaring Michaels won by submission causing the ire of the Hart family and the people who attended the event. For the 2016 edition, it was announced that the event would last 4 hours. It will have a format similar to the defunct WWE PPV "Bragging Rights" in which it will have RAW and SmackDown Live superstars fighting in a classic 5 vs. 5 fight for brand supremacy.

411Mania reported that unlike last year's Survivor Series, the COVID-19 pandemic is the reason the NXT brand will not participate. Virus outbreaks occurred in both NXT home arenas, Full Sail University and WWE Performance Center, prompting WWE to exclude NXT wrestlers from the show, thereby avoiding potential transmission of the virus to members of the Raw and SmackDown roster.
The fights developed from scripted storylines, where wrestlers portrayed heroes, villains, or less distinct characters in scripted lines that created tension and ended with wrestling matches or a series of matches. WWE writers for the Raw and SmackDown brands, as well as the storylines created for the weekly WWE TV shows, Monday Night Raw and Friday Night Smack Down, predetermined the results.
