Welcome one, welcome all to my streaming consciousness as AEW comes to you and me LIVE from Dailey's place in Jacksonvile. Tonight, AEW puts its last foot forward on the road to Full Gear. Will Chris Jericho and MJF redeem this storyline? Let's hope they can make some chicken salad out of the chicken scratch we've seen so far. Will the Young Bucks try to clear up whether or not they're babyface underdogs going into Saturday Night? Will Eddie Kingston verbally eviscerate someone? Time to find out.
Le Champion, Santana and Jake Hager are being interviewed by Dasha and Jericho congratulates Hager on his "victory" in Bellator last week. Hager's face wears the hard scars of that battle. MJF and Wardlow show up and the trash talk begins. Jericho goes so far as to call MJF "soft". That'll surely shake wrestling to its foundation. Jericho joins Tony, JR and Excalibur on commentary. MJF and Wardlow v. Sammy Guevara and Ortiz kick things off. I don't get this. The story here revolves around the following:
This doesn't make sense to me, at all. Why is Wardlow helping MJF in joining? His inclusion in the Circle would necessitate his no longer being needed by MJF. Wardlow "isn't signed" to AEW. He'd be fired. Shouldn't he be the big babyface in waiting to turn on MJF? Jericho has now made his 3rd reference to Eric Bischoff. Just something to think about. Sammy Guevara is cleaning house like Ricky Morton on a hot tag in 1986. THIS IS (would be) AWESOME if Guevara wasn't supposed to be the despicable heel in 3 days time against Matt Hardy.
Jericho remains entertaining at the desk. His mouth is perpetual motion. Matt Hardy, under Serpentico's mask, throws a chair at Sammy. No word yet on if Sammy is alive. MJF with an armbar submission, he immediately makes a beeline for the desk and tackles Jericho. Gets broken up quickly and Jericho seems pretty darn impressed. The match itself? Pretty fun. The story? I'll let you know as soon as I understand what's going on.
Tony Schiavone is at a replacement home for Kenny Omega. There's a picture on the end table that I can't make out. It's important because every single shot in the interview features it.
We will finally have the singles debut of Miro. Trent will pay for...accidentally running into a video game. Miro is lean as heck. Looks to be in the best physical shape of his life. Honestly this feud makes less sense than Jericho and MJF. Apparently Miro and Kip Sabian had a Wilson The Volley Ball type relationship with that game. This honestly should have been Chuck Taylor's match. Trent is the one in this team with the star power. There's a degree of protection he should have. What we're going to have here is (likely) a highly competitive match which will do not a darn thing for Miro. Chuck Taylor can be destroyed in less than 5 minutes and lose no credibility. Taylor and Sabian are hone, having fought to the back as we go to commercial.
Excellent use of Picture in Picture here. Penelope Ford and Orange Cassidy argue at ringside and the Mighty Dark Order attack him. Referee ejects them from ringside. Trent is hanging in there. Dark Results being flashed. I want to personally thank Mike Johnson for asking Tony Kahn yesterday if he'd consider splitting Dark up. 2 hours, 15 minutes is just way too long to watch squash matches, that's why this week's report was results only. Anyway, Trent is hanging in there. Miro should be destroying guys. Absolutely devastating them in his wake.
BTW Jericho remains at ringside commentary. I was assuming he'd leave after the brawl. Tope over the top by Trent and almost scores a 3 count. Trent slips off the top rope and an accolade by Miro and that's all she wrote. Chuck re-emerges and gets destroyed quickly, EXACTLY as the match should have gone. And now Orange Cassidy takes out Miro and Kip with a lackadaisical dive. Miro should never been in that position. Did nothing for his credibility.
Earlier today, Jim Ross interviewed Adam Page. Page is slurring his words a bit, so he's playing the drunk headed into the 2nd biggest match of his life. JR calls him on it. Good move. Page admits he's nervous and if he doesn't win, at least he has his whiskey. So the big match that we've waited a year for has the storyline of whether or not one of the combatants will be inebriated or not.
Forty six minutes in and Orange Cassidy vs. John Silver is the match they've done the best job hyping for Saturday so far, in case you're wondering.
Hype video for Saturday's tag team title match and then we get Team Taz. Taz waited 3 hours to meet Tony Khan and TK wouldn't see him. Team Taz airs their grievances over not being booked Saturday. Taz can't make any sense of it at all. He runs down Cody. My spidey-sense tells me Team Taz will be making their presence felt during the Cody v Darby Allin.
Private Party v The Young Bucks is up next. Before Private Party makes it to the ring, Matt Hardy gets laid out by Sammy Guevara. If I'm not mistaken, this will be the rubber match between the 2 teams. We all remember Private Party's upset in the 1st round of the inaugural World Tag Team Title Tournament. Sometime since then, I recall The Bucks getting the win in a rematch. Jericho is really driving home that stipulations matter, bringing Cody's vow to never challenge for the AEW World Title up for a 2nd time. Too soon as far as I'm concerned to invoke a stipulation like this. At some point the Bucks are winning that title and they've pigeon-holed themselves to a spot where they have to win, thus making FTR's title reign too short to mean anything.
Whatever happened to the 20 minute brush with greatness anyway?
Matt Jackson is favoring the ankle FTR injured last week. Private Party and the Bucks have a lot of in ring chemistry and clearly enjoy working together. Is this epic? Clearly not. Again, this is a spot where the Bucks should be made to made to look like world beaters. Instead, we're getting great moves and more dives over the top rope. Is there any vested interest here? Who am I decide for you.
There'll be a Full Gear Countdown on TNT at 11PM Friday.
Private Party nails Gin & Juice and Matt Jackson has to be the one to make the save. Young Bucks get the win with the BTE Trigger. They're clearly making it an issue that Matt is going into Full Gear injured. FTR attacks and sets up a steel chair around Matt's ankle but Hangman Page and Kenny Omega make the save. So we get a little staredown preview of their match.
Tony Schiavone brings out Eddie Kingston and Jon Moxley for their face to face meeting. The stipulation has been added that if there's any physicality tonight, the Full Gear match is off. I can't even describe how intensely awesome Kingston is here, equating the AEW title as everything he sacrificed his future for. To my amazement, Moxley is matching him on the stick. This segment right here is the living embodiment of talking fans into the building. There is a piece of me that's been convinced by Kingston that he has a chance here.
Finally, after 7 months, Pac has a few words for us. He seems to be talking about isolation driving him crazy. To be honest, the sound was pretty muffled. It wasn't entirely clear what he was saying. Red Velvet is in the dreaded "already in the ring" spot. As if we needed further proof that she's about to be annihilated, but we go backstage to find out that next week on Dynamite, The Natural Nightmares will take on Butcher and Blade. The Bunny distracts QT and B & B attack from behind. I the time it took me to type that last sentence, Nyla Rose has pretty much put Velvet away. Beast Bomb and Nyla pulls her up at 2. A knee strike puts this one to bed. Shida vs Nyla Rose in 3 days for the title. Serena Deeb vs. Alysin Kay for the NWA Women's title should be excellent. Vickie Guerrero runs down both Brandi Rhodes and Hikaru Shida. Pull apart ensues.
We get a video package hyping Kenny Omega vs Adam Page, complete with Cinderella's "Don't Know What You Got Til It's Gone". Saw them for the 1st time in the Summer of 1988 opening up for Judas Priest at the Providence Civic Center.
Darby Allin video where he runs over a guy in a Cody mask.
Main Event Time. Cody & The Gunn Club (Billy and Austin) vs. Colt Cabana, John Silver and 10. Anyone take odds on what time (EST) Orance Cassidy shows up? I've got 9:56.
If I ever use Manscape I'd prefer Bruce Buffer not provide commentary.
We are reminded of the time Brodie Lee annihilated Cody for the TNT title. Remember when they were making Lee a star and the Dark Order formidable? Yeah, me too. I believe Austin and Billy are now part of Cody's Nightmare Family, and Excalibur confirmed it. My guess is that, sometime after the PPV, the Nightmare Family will have more of a cohesive presence in AEW. It's kind of surreal to see Billy headlining here. It's been 27 years since I first saw him live as part of the Smoking Gunns tag team. Vance Preston (10) has a great presence about him. we go to commercial.
I learned a few weeks ago that Jennifer Nettles won a Grammy, tonight I learned what she looks like. That's about as familiar as I plan on getting with the Talent Show thing TNT has coming up.
Only 2 minutes before I lose by pick on Orange Cassidy's appearance.
We're back and we've got your standard 6 man action. I still say AEW has enough really effective trios to have a six man title. 9:57, I lose. Austin Gunn with the Quick Draw on 10 for the pin. This brings out the rest of the Dark Order and Orange Cassidy (9:57 dammitt). Things clear out quickly as Cody cuts a promo on Darby Allin, lurking in the stands. Cody clearly acting as the heel as we go to credits.
