STEPHEN AMELL INJURED ON SET OF 'HEELS'

By Mike Johnson on 2020-10-30 15:15:00

Deadline.com reported today that actor Stephen Amell was injured while performing a stunt on the set of forthcoming STARZ professional wrestling drama Heels.

There is no official word yet where Amell was injured performing in a pro wrestling-centric scene, but that would appear to be the case as Deadline's report states Amell was checked by stunt/wrestling coordinators.

STARZ issued the following statement: "While performing a stunt on the set of Heels this week, Stephen Amell sustained an injury to his back.  Following a medical evaluation, he is now resting and recovering at home in anticipation of his return to set.”

The spokesperson added production "has not been affected and continues as Amell recuperates."

The one hour drama is built around the story two brothers, one a babyface and the other a heel in the ring, and the struggles they have on camera and behind the scenes after the death of their father, the promoter of the Georgia-based wrestling promotion they both worked for.  Production began several weeks ago in the Atlanta area.

Back in 2017, former WWE champion turned UFC fighter CM Punk impressed casting directors so much that he tested for the series for the role of the heel brother, Jack Spade, but was not hired as the project was put on hold.  Ammel is cast in that role now.  There is no word whether Punk may be involved in the resurrected version of the project.

The original plans by Producers was to try and cast Henry Cavill and Jack Reynor as the leads, which did not happen.

Amell, a massive pro wrestling fan, has appeared in the ring for World Wrestling Entertainment and Ring of Honor and has an extremely close friendship with All Elite Wrestling's Cody, walking him to the ring at AEW Revolution on 2/29 in Chicago.  Heels will be his first series after Arrow's eight seasons, which included appearances as Oliver Queen/Green Arrow across a number of other DC series on the CW Network.
