Welcome to this week's Ring of Honor TV report!
I am filling in this week for Anthony Pires, who is vacationing at his fall residence in The Netherland Antilles.
ROH TV opened up with Quinn McKay breaking down everything that went down last week, including Jay Lethal beating New Japan's David Finlay last week. Jay Lethal cut a promo saying he wasn't being cocky when he predicted he would face his ROH Tag Team Championship partner Jonathan Gresham in the finals. He just knows they are the best. They then showed Gresham besting Matt Sydal on last week's TV episode. Gresham said pure wrestlers live in the moment and this tourney has the best pure technical wrestlers. He said he's dealing with a bad leg but would keep fighting because that's how important it is that real wrestling returns to Ring of Honor. Gresham buried Sydal, saying he took a spot from a real pure wrestler who could have been in the tournament.
They recapped Matt Taven's return and beatdown of Vincent.
They aired highlights of Fred Yehi and Tracy Williams' path thus far in the tournament.
Fred Yehi vs. Tracy Williams
They did the Catch Point handshake from their days in EVOLVE, which was NOT namechecked. Yehi used the ropes several times and had wasted two of his rope breaks before the five minute mark. Williams was caught in a hold and used his first rope break. Yehi stomped away at him and locked on another hold, forcing Williams to use his second, so they were tied in that regard.
They battled back and forth. Williams scored a near fall with a brainbuster. He drilled Yehi with a lariat. Yehi surprised him with a small package and tied up Williams, who used the ropes and was now out of rope breaks. They battled back and forth with near falls, then fired back and forth with strikes. They battled in the corner, where Yehi was drilled face-first into the buckles. Tracy Williams went for the Crossface. Yehi fought to break it and blocked it. Williams snatched him in a piledriver and covered Yehi, who used his third and final rope break to halt the pinfall
They came here to kick ass and use rope breaks and they are all outta rope breaks.
Yehi was snatched in a crossface. Williams waited for him to try and fight his way out and snatched him into a Dragon Sleeper instead, trapping him in the ropes. With no hope for escape, Yehi tapped.
Your winner, Tracy Williams!
Williams vs. Lethal next week in the semi-finals.
EC3 came out for a promo. He questioned if Honor was truly real because we all allow ourselves to be controlled by the media and corporations. He said they take the freedom and we lose the focus. He asked if there was honor in the past or honor in fighting back. He said all men are fallible. He said he wasn't here to wrestle but to fight and he's going to put the word honor to the test. Great promo.
Backstage, Shane Taylor and Soldiers of Savagery stepped up to EC3 because when EC3 namechecked some of the ROH originals earlier, he didn't name Shane. He told EC3 he was stepping in Shane's house. The Briscoes, who were named earlier by EC3, said it was their house. Jay Briscoe challenged for a six man tag team bout as they were held apart. EC3 stared at all of this and then walked away, not committing.
They aired a package showing Josh Woods and PJ Black's path in the tournament.
Josh Woods vs. PJ Black
Lots of good wrestling here with Woods looking especially sharp on the mat. Black exhausted a number of his rope breaks early. Woods nailed a nice back suplex with a bridge for a close two count. They battled back and forth. Black was snatched into a cross armbreaker but was able to break free. Black scored several near falls but was trapped in the center of the ring in an ankle lock. He fought valiantly to escape but realized all was lost and finally tapped.
Your winner, Josh Woods!
Woods vs. Gresham next week in the semi-finals.
