SECOND 10/9 SOUTHERN UNDERGROUND PRO REPORT FROM THE COLLECTIVE

By Larry Goodman on 2020-10-10 10:07:00

Southern Underground Pro “Swing the Axe” report from the Collective: Part 2 in Indianapolis at the Marion County Fairgrounds.

AJ Gray is the new SUP Bonestorm Champion, defeating AC Mack in a surprise bonus match, ending Mack’s title reign at 369 days.

This was a strong show – briskly paced (nine matches in 2:15) with refreshing variety. Every match was at good, several were super hard-hitting and it had a technical wrestling classic in Daniel Makabe vs. Lee Moriarty.

The crowd was estimated at 250 by a source at the scene I trust. It didn’t look like that many on the FITE.TV livestream with the way people were spread out.

This was SUP’s first show since March. A tornado destroyed their home base in Nashville…then there was this pandemic.  CCommentary was by So Bros Mose and a rotation of Jesse Butler, Mr. Brickster, Dominic Garrini and Kevin Ku on color. Ku was particularly good in the role.

(1)Violence is Forever (Dominic Garrini & Kevin Ku) defeated Infinity and Beyond (Colin Delaney & Cheech) to retain the SUP tag titles in 12:03.  Ring announcer and SUP promoter “Righteous” Jesse Butler revealed the new SUP championship titles before the match. A good opener not great. Things were rushed and less than crisp at points. The expected stiff stuff from Ku and Garrini and cool double teams by the Infinity guys.  Garrini pinned Delaney after Total Elimination followed by Chasing the Dragon (roundhouse kick/brainbuster combo).

(2) AJ Gray defeated Nolan Edward in 4:30. Edward was sporting the towel he received from JD Drake. Gray overwhelmed Edward at the opening bell. Edward recovered, sorta, and they went toe-to-toe. Suicide dive by Edward. Slingshot Blue Thunder Bomb from Gray. A ridiculous slapfest broke out before Gray connected with a three consecutive loud lariats. Edward kicked out of the first one at one. The last two killed him dead. An excellent short match. Gray over strong, showing loads of fire.

(3) Allie Kat defeated Davienne in 8:40.  These are two stout women. Kat was giving  Davienne a ton of offense early. Kat reeled off a series of moves ending with the cannonball. Davienne escaped Kat’s first attempt for the piledriver. An innovative transition led into the finish – Kat did a power slide into the corner taking a head bump on the middle buckle. Kat evaded Davienne’s baseball slide and her ankle slammed into the post. Kat caught Davienne with the piledriver as she attempted to climb through the ropes on the gimpy ankle. Good match aided by Kat’s savvy.

(4) Daniel Makabe defeated Lee Moriarty via submission in 17:40. Moriarty has a huge weekend ahead of him. Ku believed this was 2019 SCI winner Makabe’s first match since the pandemic. An early highlight was the back and forth struggle to get the Octopus lock applied. Moriarity focused on Makabe’s arm, looking for a Fujiwara armbar. Makabe attacked Moriarty’s leg. A high angle belly to back suplex by Makabe left both men down. Crowd chanted “Lee” after a Moriarty double stomp. A deft mat scramble ensued. Moriarty double stomped Makabe’s shoulder and used La Mistica to transition to the Fujiwara but Makabe made the ropes. Makabe spiked Moriarty’s head into the mat with a top rope huracanrana. Yikes. Makabe got the Makabe lock applied but Moriarty hooked the ropes with his foot. Makabe used a  wildly inventive bridging cloverleaf suplex for a near fall. A huge miss by Makabe landed him on his head. Moriarty went for the Makable lock and got it, but Makabe magically reversed and Moriarty had no way out. If your tastes run to pure technical wrestling, this match is a must see.

(5) O’Shay Edwards defeated Jake Something in 7:37. A hoss fight of epic proportions. Something with a few choice heel maneuvers early. Fast forward…A wicked exchange of forearms ended with a truly evil rabbit lariat by Something for a near fall, then a sitout powerbomb for another near fall. Edwards used a swinging side slam for a near fall. Edwards missed a spear. Something connected with his. Edwards stunned Something with a spinning backfist, followed with a modified burning hammer and pinned him with a sitout tombstone piledriver. Talk about finishing strong.

(6) Anthony Henry defeated Jaden Newman via submission in 11:17. Henry in tremendous shape with not a hint of ring rust. Henry shrugged off Newman’s chops. It was all Newman until Henry swept the leg delivered a numbing kick to the back. Henry lit Newman up with his striking game. His offense looked absolutely stellar. Nice comeback sequence from Newman – cravate driver, TKO and Meteora for a two count. Henry back on the attack with a vengeance, forcing Newman to tap with an insane variation of a dragon sleeper. Newman absorbed a ferocious beating, showed no quit and earned beaucoup respect in the process.

(7) Bret Ison defeated Erick Stevens in 6:42. Stevens has gotten as lean as I’ve ever seen him. After a feeling out process, the story became Stevens trying to trade strikes with Ison, which is never a good idea. Stevens got a flying armbar and not much else. Stevens kicked out of Street Justice (butterfly piledriver). Ison did him in with a ripcord spinning backfist. Man, did the veteran Stevens every put Ison over in style.

(8) AC Mack defeated 1 Called Manders to retain the SUP Bonestorm Championship in 12:26. Mack made referee Aaron Noyes hold both title (SUP and ACTION) over his head while he did his obnoxious intro. Mack wanted no part of Manders. A kick to the rope crotched Manders and the signature Mack attack was in full effect. Mack used what Mose called the “Stacy Kiebler special”. Manders got his power game untracked. A big spot saw Manders counter Mack’s Meteora with an Oklahoma Stampede for a near fall. Manders was looking for an avalanche powerslam. Mack escaped and picked Manders off the top with a Liger bomb. Mack tried for the Mack 10. Not happening. Manders hit a doctor bomb and a massive lariat but Mack was able to roll to the floor. Manders hit the avalanche powerslam but Mack somehow kicked out. Manders went high risk with a moonsault. Mack got out from under it. After delivering a Yakuza kick, Mack kicked Manders low and pinned him with feet on the ropes. The questions were how and when the wily Mack would cheat not if. Kudos to Manders – my head said the outcome was a forgone conclusion and he had be believing he could actually take the title.

As Mack was running his mouth, Gray’s music hit.  Gray made it clear he was gunning for Mack’s title. Mack said let’s do it now as a swerve. Mack then gave Gray a low blow and called for the bell.

(9) AJ Gray defeated AC Mack in 30 seconds to capture the SUP Bonestorm Championship. Mack covered. Gray kicked out. Gray took decaptitated Mack with a lariat. 1-2-3.

Former SUP Champion Ison came to the ring to shake hands with Gray.
