The final show of day 1 is upon us and it is the brainchild of one AJ Gray, chock full of exciting matchups. I’m staying up, temporarily disavowing the adult concept of sleep and will be here through all of it. J-Rose is your ring announcer! We’re going right into an unannounced match....it’s:
Match 1: Timmy Lou Retton vs Mike Outlaw vs Hoodfoot vs Zay Washington
AC Mack is out and pissed about losing his SUP Bonestorm championship earlier and not being on this card. Mack adds himself to the match. This goes wild from the start. Hoodfoot with a crossbody dive to the outside early on. Timmy Lou with a moonsault to his feet into a cutter on Outlaw. Mack trying to steal the pin. Retton with a pounce on Mack! Mike Outlaw with a rock bottom to Retton. Hoodfoot with an overdrive. Zay pulls Hoodfoot off the top and hits Liger bomb. Superkick to Zay from Mack and a Mack-10 for a near fall that Retton breaks up. Retton destroys Mack with a spin out backbreaker but Mike Outlaw runs through with a yakuza kick to snag the win.
Winner: Mike Outlaw
Well that was a surprise and it was good. Match went super fast but nothing felt out of place. Everyone worked their ass off. Great start to the show. Mack added some good drama here and it was fun watching him have a bad night.
Match 2: JTG vs Trey Miguel
One half of Cryme Tyme vs one half of The Rascals, both guys making their name in singles action lately. Trey attacks before the bell, sending JTG outside and Trey hits a power slide ddt to the floor. Strike battle on the outside but JTG eats the post. JTG gets put in the tree of woe. Miguel distracts the ref and slaps JTG balls. JTG takes some shots while he recovers and finally hits a pop up back suplex cutter. Sling Blade from JTG! Miguel gets caught off the second with a spinning face buster and a sidewalk slam for a near fall. JTG wants to pick up Trey but he can barely stand. JTG wants a Razor’s edge but Trey rolls through for a pin attempt. Trey dodges a lariat with a kip up but doesn’t dodge the second one. Two count! JTG gets his head stuffed in the turnbuckle. super kick and corner 619. JTG with a Brooklyn’s Edge (razor’s edge setup into a running cutter) and that’s all for Trey Miguel.??
Winner: JTG
What a fight! Both these guys left it all in the ring. JTG offers his hand in respect. This was a lot of fun to watch. JTG looked REALLY good in there. Maybe he’s due for another run on top?
Match 3: Top Flight (Angel Dorado & Air Wolf) vs 40 Acres (PB Smooth & Tre Lamar) vs Culture SZN (Christian Casanova & Tasha Steelz)
HUUUUUUGE POP for Casanova when he comes out. Air Wolf and Casanova start this off and feel each other out. After a friendly rope break, they start lighting each out up with chops. Top Flight gets some double team action on Casanova, sending him out and bringing in Tre Lamar. Smooth gets tagged in so Top Flight and Culture SZN team up to take out the big man. Tasha gets thrown up 7ft to rana him out of the ring. Casanova fighting Top Flight 2 on 1. Smooth is back, Dorado wanted a tope but Smooth grabs and stunguns him. 40 acres going house with a chokeslam/neck break combo. They focus on Air Wolf but he drops Smooth with some elbows to the head and a missile drop kick to Lamar. Casanova in with a tope to Smooth. Air Wolf dives. Tasha Steelz with a top rope tumbleweed. Dorado flies. Dorado tries to go for Casanova and all sorts of crazy stuff just happens. 450 rana, Casanova lands on his feet and hits a tilt-a-whirl facebuster. Casanova turned inside out by a PB Smooth lariat and a powerbomb seals the deal for a three count.
Winners: 40 Acres
YES! Everyone showed off here but Casanova looked like a damn STAR. Lots of high-flying action going full speed, Smooth ended up being the powerhouse no one could withstand.
Match 4: Trish Adora vs Suge D (for the Pan-Afrikan World Diaspora Wrestling Championship)
Trish won the inaugural PAWDW championship back in February, defeating O’Shay Edwards, Eel O’Neal, Darius Lockhart & Mr. Grim in a single night tournament. Suge D has been around the indies forever, appearing almost literally everywhere recently. This has a big fight feel. Suge and Trish test each other’s technical wrestling, trading wrist locks, cravats & hammerlocks. Trish rolls through with a pin attempt and Suge is SHOOK. Another hammerlock and Suge is tossed from the ring. Suge is getting frustrated as Trish holds the ropes to let him back in (a call back to how he treated her during her entrance). Trish working the wrist. Suge finally throws a desperation gut punch to crumble the champ and lands a kick to the head. Surfboard stretch and Suge is finally in control. Hangman’s double stomp as the crowd turns on him. Another kick to the back and Adora is angry. She’s up and throwing chops that send Suge to the corner. Spinning back heel kick and a German suplex for a two count. Suge wraps up a flash ankle lock and Trish is in trouble. Transition to an arm lock. Trish escapes and hits Lariat Tubman! Suge kicks out and Trish is in shock. Suge struggles to his feet and she angrily hits another. Trish locks in a rings of saturn variation, Suge is close to the ropes but she snatches his arm back and he’s forced to verbally submit.
Winner (and still champ): Trish Adora
Adora was ahead of the technician in Suge D for much of this match. He got frustrated and went to the well out of desperation. Trish just out toughed him from that point on. This was a great watch. Suge bows to his queen before they hug it out.
Match 5: O’Shay Edwards vs Calvin Tankman
Both of these guys are coming off big wins today. This is gonna be a big ol’ big man fight. Forehead to forehead. Test of strength. Slamming chest to chest and they have to walk it off. Tankman with a pounce that sends Edwards to the front row. Tankman wants a dive but gets punched instead. Calvin trying to get some space but Edwards spears him. Trading chops and forearms until Tankman hits a drop kick and suicide dive. Tanks misses a running shooting star but eats a double crossbody. Trading lariats but they won’t drop. Edwards with a pop up powerbomb and Tankman won’t stay down. Edwards has Tankman up but Calvin slips it, hits a spinebuster and a short elbow to the back of the head. Edwards is up and Tankman sends him to hell with a sit out tombstone. ??
Winner: Calvin Tankman
BIG MEN SLAPPING MEAT. This was great. Both guys brought the fight, anyone could have taken it. I enjoyed this a lot.
Match 6: Faye Jackson vs Devon Monroe vs Margi Belle vs Willow Nightingale
Every wants the quick roll up. Faye blasts Belle. Devon shows off his Lucia skills. Willow with a superkick. Belle with a punt kick to Willow. 3-way submission broken up by Faye’s rear. Fight to the outside. Trading dives. Devon wants a second one but Willow intercepts with headbutts and a super Plex. Willow has him up for another super and Faye hits a spear. Belle with a crossbody to Faye and everyone is down. Belle with a code breaker to Monroe. Faye with a Samoan drop. Willow with a DVD. Monroe with a springboard jawbreaker and a rear view. Monroe hits knees with Faye and Belle but Willow hits a powerbomb for the win!
Winner: Willow Nightingale
This was a lot of fun! Everyone was going for it, it was just a matter of who was able to catch a pin in the right moment. Devon Monroe was showing off some high flying skills throughout this contest but he just got caught in the end.
Match 7: AJ Gray vs Dezmond Xavier
Gray is on a roll, let’s see if he can go 4-0 on the day against Impact’s Dezmond Xavier. He tries to toss Xavier but get launched across the ring. Xavier with quick no-count pin attempts and flips completely out of a trip to unsettle Gray’s calm. Moonsault from Dezmond, Gray catches it but falls back into a two count. Gray finally catches him with a kick to the head. Chops while Dez is caught up on the ropes and Irish whips in him into a face buster. Trading elbow strikes...this doesn’t go well for Xavier. Pop up spinebuster and a powerbomb from Gray makes Dezmond barely kick out. AJ Gray with a flying headbutt, Xavier turns it into a reverse dragon sleeper. Xavier with a pele kick and corkscrew senton but Gray kicks out. Xavier going for the kill but Gray turns him inside out with a lariat. Close two. Gray wants another but eats a superkick. Dezmond backflips at Gray, gets caught up and thrown to the ropes, allowing AJ to hit an even bigger clothesline for the pin.
Winner: AJ Gray
Damn. Another absolute banger. Gray had about the best day you can have overall. This was all action bell-to-bell.
Match 8: ACH vs Lee Moriarty
Moriarty has had a rough day of losses. Let’s see if he can reverse his fortune in his biggest match of the day (potentially the weekend). Testing the technical skills to start before Moriarty goes to the high flying well, hitting a high-angle arm drag. Battle to the outside, Moriarty with chops. ACH hits chops but ends up blasting the post. ACH with a trip and double stomp to the back. Kick to the spine and a body slam for a 1-count. Tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Moriarty back with his own double stomps and a tornado DDT for a two count. Inside out cutter from ACH for a near fall. Snap German suplex from ACH forces a kick out. Moriarty snaps ACH’s finger and double stomps the arm. DDT to the arm. Out to the apron, they got get a breath before trading shots back and forth. Lee with a trip into a hammerlock. ACH’s arm is getting messed up. However, ACH has feet and a drop kick drops Moriarty. Trading shots again. ACH with a tiger driver for two. Moriarty working an arm bar, ACH able to get his foot to the rope. ACH with a flurry of kicks and a brain buster....Moriarty kicks out! ACH whiffs a 450, Moriarty wants an armlock but rolls through to a mousetrap pin for three and the shock win!
Winner: Lee Moriarty
Hell of a match! I love how I’ve seen 3 Moriarty matches today and all of them have felt different but still very very good. ACH looked every bit the star he is. This went to a breakneck pace at the end and the look on Lee’s face when he realized he won? Fantastic.
Main Event: 2 Cold Scorpio vs AR Fox
Two veteran high flyers in wrestling get to collide in the main event of this fantastic show. They start slow and friendly, testing each other and having a good time about it. Fox hits a skin the cat drop kick and Scorpio starts to get serious. Fox is dragged outside and Scorpio lays in some shots. Fox gets tripped up on the apron and take a flipping back bump. Fox with a DDT back in the ring but misses the follow up senton. Scorpio with a spinning back enziguri. Leg drop to the face and Fox kicks out. Fox with a tornado DDT and Scorpio kicks out. Fox with a coast to coast, sending Scorpio out to the floor. Fox with a plancha to the floor. Fox with leg drop to the apron and a follow up senton but Scorpio will not stay down. Front flip heel kick drops Fox. Front flip leg drop from the top! Fox kicks out! Back suplex sets up the backflip leg drop! Fox kicks out again! Trading kicks and Scorpio is dropped. He pops up into a springboard cutter and Fox hits a 450 splash for the win!
Winner: AR Fox
Nice. Nice Nice Nice. It started slow but as soon as Scorpio started flying, you saw the clock turn back. Fox winning made absolute sense. This main event was about respect and impact over work rate. Heck of a close, seeing those final moves from the 50+ Scorpio. Just daaamn. Good stuff.
And that’s it for “For the Culture”. This was great. Top to bottom. Watch this whole damn show. That’s the recommendation. Whole thing. Gobble it up. Put it in your eyeballs. Take this show in and see a great showcase of some of the finest black athletes that exist on the US wrestling scene today. But also you’re going to see some of the best matches I’ve watched all day. So just do it. You’ll have fun.
Next up is....uhhh....checks notes.....Effy’s Big Gay Brunch at 11am. That is in...8ish hours. Okie doke. I’m should go sleep now. Until then.
