G1 Climax Day 13, October 11:
A Block
Jeff Cobb defeated Tomohiro Ishii. I had high expectations for this after their incredible match in last years tournament, and it delivered. Right from the opening bell they ran at each other with shoulder tackles. Cobb went down from one and kipped up. Cobb began throwing around the much smaller Ishii, which was a sight to behold. Cobb dropped Ishii with an incredible headbutt, and Ishii dropped Cobb with a stiff forearm. The both blasted each other with lariats, and exchanged suplexes until neither man could get back to their feet. Ishii hit more headbutts, but couldn’t get Cobb up for the Brainbuster. The finish saw Cobb catch Ishii in a pop up powerbomb followed by Tour of the Islands to score a big win. This was great.
Jay White defeated Yujiro Takahashi . White, being the arrogant piece of shit he is, didn’t even change into his ring gear for this, because he thought Bullet Club mate, Yujiro would lay down for him. Well he did, but he kicked out at two, twice. Yujiro then almost caught White in a couple of roll ups, he used a low blow and also hit Miami Shine for a near fall. Gedo caused a distraction, White then hit a low blow and Bladerunner to get the win. This was really well done.
Will Ospreay defeated Taichi. This was great, and I’d say this was Ospreays best performance of the tournament. Taichi continues to be one of the standouts of the year too. Ospreay took to the air far more than he has been, and whipped out some combinations he hasn’t been using much in the tournament. Taichi used hard strikes and suplexes. He caught an Ospreay hand spring, and turned it into a devastating looking back drop driver. Ospreay missed a 450 Splash and Taich followed up with an Axe Bomber to the back of the head. Ospreay tried to counter a lariat into a powerbomb, but Taichi countered again and hit a last ride. The finishing sequence was classic Ospreay. They struggled between the Stormbreaker and Black Mephisto, until Ospreay was back dropped and landed on his feet before hitting an OsCutter for an amazing near fall. He then hit Hidden Blade and Stormbreaker to secure another major win. Fantastic match.
Kota Ibushi defeated Minoru Suzuki. This was one of the matches of the tournament. They started grappling and feeling each other out, until they ended up on the ramp. There they began blasting each other with forearms. They made it back into the ring and it was more hard Suzuki strikes with Ibushi refusing to go down. Then it was Ibushi who began kicking Suzuki, who also wouldn’t go down. There was a fantastic exchange as Ibushi dropped Suzuki with a boot, but before he hit the ground he took Ibushi down with a forearm. When they got back up it was more rapid fire forearms and slaps, until Suzuki went for a sleeper. He blocked a couple of knee strikes and turned it into a Boston Crab. Ibushi fought out of another sleeper and rocked Suzuki with a couple of bicycle knees, and followed up with Kamagoye. This was beautiful.
Kazuchika Okada defeated Shingo Takagi. I may have spoke too soon in thinking the previous match was the match of the tournament, because this gave it a serious run for its money. This was an outstanding main event and the first Okada match of the tournament that felt like a proper Okada main event. Yet, he STILL didn’t hit the Rainmaker. Shingo controlled the match early on, until Okada made the comeback and went for the Moneyclip. There were some incredible sequences as they blocked each other signature moves and went back and forth with momentum. The moment of the match was without a doubt when Shingo hit Okada with a Rainmaker, and Okada sold it like his life flashed before his eyes. Shingo then blasted him with a Pumping Bomber, and blocked an Okada clothesline and turned it into Made in Japan for some excellent near falls. Okada hit a short arm clothesline and the crowd were crying out for the Rainmaker. Okada also hit a very hard rolling lariat. The finish saw Okada battle out of Last do the Dragon to lock on the Moneyclip again, and after a long struggle, Shingo sold this incredibly, looking like his eyes were about to pop out of his head, and finally passed out in the hold. Fantastic main event.
What a show this was, easily the best of the tournament so far.
