GCW “Jimmy Lloyd’s Degeneration F”

The Collective 2020: Part 1

10/9/20 - Indianapolis, IN - 12pm

In a better version of 2020, I would have been hobbling around Tampa in April with a surgically-repaired foot, covering the Collective shows (and others) at its rightful place on Wrestlemania week. But as we know, 2020 didn’t roll that way. Now months later, GCW has started to run shows again that have been generally well-received by fans and wrestlers who want to feel some semblance of normality again. After experimenting with a few multi-card weekends, It was only a matter of time before GCW tried to run back this packed weekend of shows. Full Disclosure: I’M at home, watching on FITE TV. I’m personally not that comfortable with shows in public yet but I do appreciate the social distancing and safety protocols that GCW has built into this event. That said, I’m ready for my yearly drink from the wrestling firehose. Join me in this 12-part series of show reports on @PWInsider.

Which brings us to our first show of the weekend!

J-Rose is on announcer duties. Kevin Gill & Tony Deppen are on commentary.

Match 1: Scramble: Kung Fu Janela, Elayna Black, Brayden Lee, Blake Griffin, Sonico, Alex Ocean, Eli Isom

In truth, I’m trying to get a handle on WHO is in this surprise unannounced match. Is this a scramble? Yes! Even commentary is confused about who is in this chaotic contest. This is very fast-paced, everyone getting a chance to go wild, as a scramble should be. Great finish sequence shows Lee hitting a Shooting star on Janela and a 630 senton on Sonico for the win!

Winner: Brayden Lee

Again, all energy going 100/mph. This match was a pure surprise so massive apologies if I missed anyone or got a name wrong here.

Match 2: YNDB (Charlie Tiger & Ellis Taylor) vs Smokin’ Buds (Cody & David Morton) vs Top Flight (Angel Dorado & Air Wolf) vs I’m Working on Dying (Steve Sanders & Dyln McKay

So we follow the scramble with a crazy 4-way tag? Aight. My brain is committed to this energy overdose. Lots of frantic tandem offense here. Dyln McKay is VERY flippy, hitting a pair of running shooting stars, one on the outside. YDNB with a fireman’s carry knee drop into a DVD on McKay. Smokin’ Buds hit a double stomp/backstabber combo. YIKES. McKay “hits” a flipping senton to one of the Smokin’ Buds draped on a chair to get the pin.

Winner: I’m Working on Dying

Again, all energy but this time with crazy tandem offense. Everyone was working super fast which unfortunately, led to a bit of a botch on the finish, McKay clearly missing the senton and there was no real sell so they really needed one more move to make it work. But again, all that energy hyped up the crowd.

Match 3: 1 Called Manders vs Logan Stunt

The other Stunt brother is fighting the big cowboy. This won’t go well. Stunt gets a few dives in on Manders but he gets press slammed into the ring and tossed around at ringside. Mander throws some chairs into the ring. Defiant slap from Stunt but Manders slaps him down for a two count. Stunt up with a chair and Manders eats chair shots for a tw...ONE count. Uh oh. Curb stomp from Stunt. 2 count. Huge lariat from Manders. Two count. We have our first door of the day. Manders wants a powerbomb with Stunt wraps an ankle lock. Manders fights out. Stunt blasted in the head with a LOUD chair shot. Manders sets up the table across two chairs. Manders drags him up to the top and hits a power slam through the door for the pin.

Winner: 1 Called Manders

A David vs Goliath fight at 2x speed. Fast paced. Good drama. Stunt got his licks in but Manders is tough and picked up his first win of the weekend.

Match 4: Tre Lamar vs JJ Garrett

JJ Garrett is described as “AC Slater if his mom had sex with Scott Steiner”. Lamar has control for the opening moments. He goes for a suicide dive and Garret catches him into a standing headlock for a pop. That control was impressive! Trading trips. Garrett hits a step up elbow to the back of the head. Lamar with a springboard clothesline that almost ends things. Series of counters and Lamar hits a double underhook face buster. Trading shots until Lamar hits a pair of pele kicks. Garrett with a corner 619 and a moonsault senton for a close call. Tre trips Garret and hits a frog splash elbow drop for the pin!

Winner: Tre Lamar

This was good! My first time seeing Garrett and he kept pulling out interesting innovative offense to counter the always entertaining Tre Lamar. This probably had the most trips in a match that I’ve ever seen.

Match 5: Calvin Tankman vs Cole Radrick

If Manders vs Stunt was David vs Goliath....this is gonna be Godzilla vs The Goddamned Keebler Elf. Radrick uses his speed to dodge but his chops are absolutely worthless. Tankman takes him outside and rag dolls his head against the corner post a few times. Radrick struggles back to the ring and eats a bunch of shots that crumble him over and over. Cole is swinging but again, worthless shots that only makes Calvin mad. Cole finally stuns Tankman with a shot to the head and Radrick hits a rana and a tornado DDT on a suicide dive. This is HIS MOMENT! Radrick hits a disaster kick off the venue wall. Radrick with a moonsault off the venue stairs! Tankman struggles back into the ring and eats a superkick and springboard stunner for a two count. Calvin hits a backfist that stiffens Radrick out. Cole struggles back up as Tankman taunts, hits a weak slap and takes the three count off a Calvin Tankman wild strike to the back of the head.

Winner: Calvin Tankman

Radrick was all heart but he’s fighting a TANK, man. Cole might have jacked up his knee on that disaster kick so hope he’s okay for the remainder of the weekend. This was a great first defining moment of domination for Calvin Tankman’s weekend aheadd.

Match 6: Ace Austin vs Jordan Oliver

Well, this should be fun. Austin is wrestling his a face mask on, massive props to keep your air while working in that. Pretty even to start as they feel each other out. Austin goes through a series of impressive athletic dodges on the apron, eventually driving Oliver;s head to the apron. Both are doing well to stay ahead of the other until they wipe each other out on a springboard side Russian leg sweep. Oliver back up with a lariat to the back of the head and a German suplex. Spinning brain buster for a near fall. Oliver with an ankle lock but Austin gets the rope. Austin gets Oliver to the top and hits a running rana from the apron. Famouser from the top and Oliver kicks out. Oliver pulls off Austin’s face mask and throws the bird in his face. Austin loses his cool with stomps and punches. Austin pulls out chairs and a door but takes a while to set it up. Ton of counters around the makeshift doortable and Oliver hits a clout cutter on Austin through it.

Winner: Jordan Oliver

Really even matchup for much of this. Good action and I loved the storytelling around Austin’s mask and how it really set up his defeat.

Match 7: Jimmy Lloyd vs AJ Gray

This should be pretty stiff. Gray pummels Lloyd’s chest with strikes and slams. Lloyd gets a chair and eats another slam but throws a chair into Gray’s head. Jimmy hits the ropes but Gray with an enziguri. Lloyd with a twisting brain buster. Lloyd gets backdropped and dropped with a satio suplex. Gray with a diving headbutt for a two count. Lloyd hits a tonic driver for a close two. Lloyd wants an electric chair but can;t get him up...Gray with a clothesline and suplex powerslam for the win!

Winner: AJ Gray

Solid matchup. Gray takes out the man whose name is on the show. Hard-hitting fight but not mind blowing. Didn’t need to be a showstealer and kind of served as a cool down for the crowd ahead of the final two matches of the show. That said, Lloyd is seriously underrated as a wrestler, he does a LOT in the ring.

Match 8: Blake Christian vs Starboy Charlie

Starboy Charlie is....maybe 17? Blake runs him into the corner and ruffles his hair. Atta boy. Charlie punks him right back. Blake has the wrist but Charlie cartwheels out of it and takes control. Blake is trying to keep Starboy grounded but Charlie keeps reversing things. Fast even sequence of flips, leapfrogs and drags. Starboy works his way out of a shoulder lock but eats a drop kick. Starboy with a knee to the gut and a kick to the spine. Starboy with a tope to wipe out Blake. Fast pin sequence, Starboy with a ZSJ-style bridge pin for a CLOSE two. Blake finally drops Charlie and repeats that over and over with forearms and kicks. Charlie catches a double leg, drops bombs and gets armbar. Blake fights out but gets hit with a sling blade and tilt-a-whirl arm breaker. Another big shot from Christian and a second-rope arm breaker. Blake stomps out Charlie’s arm behind his back. OW. Starboy with a 450 splash. Kick out. Locks in a kimura lock. Blake dodges a northern lights, takes out the legs, hits a bottom rope 619 and springboard 450 for two. Charlie with a twister moonsault. Trading strikes and kicks. Both try for lionsaults but eat knees. Double kick, double dropped. Blake’s arm is shot but he’s able to hit a second rope suplex and a running kick for two. Stayboy Charlie with a fisherman’s buster for two. Shooting star! Kick out! Starboy is frustrated and hitting a series of grounded headbutts. Blake with a arm bar but Charlie stacks it up to force the break. Blake with a face buster and locks up Starboy Charlie’s shoulder to force the tap out!

Winner: Blake Christian

Really, we all won. Wowwww. It was Rookie vs Vet here. Starboy did a lot of “anything you can do, I can do too”. Blake Christian’s moniker may be “All Heart” but damn, Starboy may have shown him up here. I loved seeing Blake working a more grounded style. He puts Charlie over on the mic as the next generation. Damn, this was reallllllly good. Match of the show. Unquestionably.

Deathmatch Main Event: Atticus Cogar vs Colby Corino

This match might become a shoot after Cogar and Corino got into it on social media in the weeks leading up to this. Cogar has brought syringes to the fight, making allusions to Corino’s personal battles on the mic. It might be Corino’s first death match but he jams those syringes through Cogar’s cheek and throat. OH GOD. Light tubes are out and both are getting cut up. Cogar is a bloody mess. Cogar stabs skewers into Corino’s head and hits a superkick. A pissed off Corino BLASTS Cogar with light tubes, that seem unwilling to break. Standing flip senton onto the light tubes. Oh god. Corino sets up a doortable at ringside and grabs a light tube four square. Cogar with a low blow. Thumbtacks in ring, Corino hits a cradle piledriver and whips the tube square at Cogar for a two count. A second doortable set up in the ring. Cogar draped and Corino wants a dive. Gregory Iron runs in but gets DVD’d into the doortable at ringside. The door doesn’t break! Cogar had enough time to recover and blast Corino with tubes. Doortable gets set on fire (kinda) and an air raid crash through it but Corino kicks out. Cogar hits a snapmare driver into the thumbtacksand that keeps Corino down.

Wnner: Atticus Cogar

WHEW. Some horror spots in this one. The non-fire at the end took a little wind out of the finish but that last move....damn. Corino was all emotion through this and Cogar got his moment to hit what he needed to for the win. Great main event to cap off a really good opening show. ??

And that’s it for “Jimmy Lloyd’s Degeneration F”! It started with high energy chaos and the action never really let up on the gas all that much. Christian/Starboy was the undeniable match of the show and we’ll have to talk later about how it stacked up for the weekend overall. I like its chances. Cogar & Corino shined in their main event spot and I really liked Tankman/Radrick & Lamar/Garrett. Lot of folks here have busy weekends so the fact they threw this much at us in the first show was great!

Next up is Southern Underground Pro’s “Swing of the Axe” at 4pm. Until then!
