G1 Climax Day 10, October 6th:
B Block
Hirooki Goto defeated Toru Yano. 18 seconds. The shortest match in G1 history. Goto out Yano’d Yano. It was a clothesline in the back of the head and then tied him up in a pin. That was it.
SANADA defeated Zack Sabre Jr. ZSJ always brings out a different side of SANADA, forcing him to wrestle and grapple, and they’ve always shown good chemistry together. We had more of that here as they exchanged holds. SANADA went after the taped knee of ZSJ and the arm of SANADA was a target. They traded Dragon Sleepers, and had some fantastic back and forth as they fought for control of the move. It ended when SANADA was able to hit a Tower of London followed by a moonsault to score the win. It was a very good match.
EVIL defeated Juice Robinson. This started with the usual EVIL formula, the brawl on the floor to take control of the match. It turned into a very entertaining match as it went on, with some good near falls. EVIL was the perfect heel for the white meant babyface, Juice to fire up on and sell for. Juice hit a great superplex and held on into a Jackhammer. Dick Togo blasted Juice with a chair, allowing EVIL to hit a lariat and Darkness Falls for a two count. Juice hit a hard lariat of his own. He was closing in on a win after delivering a straight right hand, but a Togo distraction allowed EVIL to hit the STO and win the match.
Tetsuya Naito defeated YOSHI-HASHI. This was a good match that felt very flat at times, but got going towards the end for a pretty fun finishing stretch. The match would have been much better if it was shorter. Some of it just felt very lifeless, which was a big contrast to YOSHI’s last match with Tanahashi. YOSHI did hit a big dive over the top to the floor, which is unlike him. He had a Butterfly Lock on Naito for what felt like forever, and there was very little selling from either guy, creating no real drama. YOSHI hit a snap Dragon suplex, a hard running lariat and a Brainbuster variation for good near falls. The finishing stretch saw Naito hit a series of strikes. Elbows, an enzuiguri, a rolling kick, to set up Destino and get the win.
Hiroshi Tanahashi defeated KENTA. This was the excellent main event that this show needed. KENTA targeted the knee of Tanahashi, using a figure four, and a dragon screw off the apron. Tanahashi took the same approach, using Dragon screws of his own to weaken the knee. He would use the Texas Cloverleaf, unsuccessfully. KENTA hit the running kick, hesitation corner dropkick and double foot stomp combo. Tanahashi would hit the Shibata corner dropkick, which was a great reference to the history both men have with him. There was a ref bump that allowed KENTA to nail Tanahashi in the head with the briefcase and a Busaiku knee for a great near fall. Tanahashi came back with a series of neckbreaker sand a High Fly Flow cross body. He then went back to the Cloverleaf, this time giving KENTA nowhere to go, forcing the submission win. This was great stuff.
