RING OF HONOR TV REPORT

By Anthony Pires on 2020-10-04 13:22:00

Ring of Honor begins this week a little cryptically, telling us that when one trend dies, another will rise.  #FollowTheTrend is apparently upon us.

Quinn McKay welcomes us to week 4 and the conclusion of the first round of the ROH Pure Championship Tournament.  We get a look at Fred Yehi and Josh Woods’ victories last week along with some post match comments.  It’s awesome seeing Woods in his Protégé-to-Silas-Young role again.

Rust Taylor is profiled talking about his upbringing in a small town that you probably have never heard of.  His strict parents guided him to a life of sports.  That’s where he fell in love with mat wrestling.  He’s very aware of the strength’s and weaknesses of his opponent tonight, Tracey Williams.

Williams is profiled next and talks about schoolyard fighting in Brooklyn.  He would bus to Philadelphia for wrestling school.  He sees himself as the master of technical wrestling.  Interestingly, he talked about the failure of the Lifeblood Faction, officially putting it to bed.

Ian Riccaboni and Caprice Coleman have the call tonight.

Rust Taylor vs. Tracy “Hot Sauce” Williams

Neither man can get an advantage as they grapple to the ropes. We get another series of lockups, Taylor with a go behind but Williams snap mares out of it.  Test of strength, Taylor converts to an armbar/wristlock combo, Williams flips out of the move, converts a snap mare into a armbar, that Taylor reverses.  Very evenly match so far.  Williams blocks a hammerlock and scores an armdrag takedown.  Williams stretches this into an STF and Taylor uses the rope to break the hold.  Taylor has 2 breaks left.  Taylor with a body scissors, Williams goes down and Taylor rains forearms on Williams’ previously injured shoulder.

5 minutes gone by.

We’re back from commercial and Taylor has a wristlock but Williams turns it into an abdominal stretch. Taylor rolls him up for 2.  Forearms by Williams followed by a series of kicks.  Taylor applies a Hammerlock stretch, trying to hyperextend the elbow.  Williams grabs a headscissors.  Kneedrop by Williams and a forearm to the head.

10 minutes gone by.

After an exchange, Taylor rolls him into an armbar, Forcing Williams to use a rope break.  He’s got 2 left.  Side kicks by Taylor.  Williams uses a second rope break to break up a pin.  Taylor with another Hammerlock stretch, Williams uses his final break, becoming the first competitor in the tournament to do so.  Top wristlock by Taylor.  Williams makes the ropes but nothing can be done.  Tracey rolls them both to the outside.  Back inside, Taylor with more side kicks and a big arm drag, Willliams responds with a discuss clothesline into a piledriver.  Williams applies a crossface in the center and Taylor taps out.

WINNER : Tracy Williams (advances to the quarter-finals)

We get a focus on Tony Deppen, from Hershey, PA.  A self described punk rock skateboarder.  The lifestyle gives him an advantage as he’s had to adapt to every style thrown at. His advantage tonight is that PJ Black knows absolutely nothing about him.  Deppen claims to not even have a Wikipedia page.

The Darewolf PJ Black is profiled next.  We know a lot of his background, based on his back story.  He had a very interesting upbringing studying natural medicine and being familiar with both Witch Doctor’s and Zulu Warriors.  Black does bring up his continued mentoring of Brian Johnson.  Interestingly, Johnson is an alternate in the Pure Tournament.

Tony Deppen vs. PJ Black w/Brian Johnson

Code of Honor adhered to, obviously. Top wristlock by Black.  Depen with a leg scissors to break it.  Black with a side headlock.  Deppen escapes but black with another headlock takedown.  Off of a monkey flip miss, Black with an arm drag takedown.  Spin kick by Black.  Single leg takedown by Deppen, Black uses the ropes to break up an STF.  Black has 2 rope breaks left.  They find their way to the outside and Black connects with a superkick.  Black off the top rope with a punch to the shoulder.  Black traps the left arm but Deppen with a rollup for 1.  Stomp by Black.  Black with a deep abdominal stretch.  He rolls up Deppen for 2.

5 minutes have passed.

Back suplex by Black.  Black with another hammerlock stretch, Black stomps down on the shoulder.  PJ hits a charge but goes for a flying forearm as Deppen hits a dropkick.  We’re back from commercial and Deppen nails running uppercuts and then double knee strikes in the corner.  Forearm by Deppen, he climbs the ropes and misses a double stomp.  Big chops by Black and headbutt takedown by Deppen.  Deppen locks in the STF and Black makes the ropes.  He’s got one left.

10 minutes gone by.

Tope somersault to the outside, Deppen connects with a double stomp for 2.  Cutter by Black for 1.  DDT for 2 by Black.  Crucifix Driver and Black gets the pin.

WINNER: PJ Black (advances to the Quarter finals)
