John Cena appeared last night on Comedy Central's The Daily Socially Distancing Show with Trevor Noah via video conferencing to promote Cena's latest children's book and more.
Cena was asked how he's kept himself motivated and optimistic over the course of this year. Cena said the situation has been different for everyone. The way he goes about life haven't changed but the rules have changed. He tries to earn every day and the perspective of that has changed, but he operates under the ethos of life is a gift and you earn every day.
Noah noted that Cena works so hard, talking about all the projects Cena is currently attached to and asked how he does all this in a 24 hour day. Cena said that when he says earn every day, when he wakes up lazy and can't do anything, that's his day to relax. He doesn't believe in the concept of grinding 24/7 as he did when he was a younger man, but does believe in seizing the day and being passionate about the projects he's involved in. If you don't make the most of the opportunity, the project is going to fall short and you are going to deliver bad entertainment. So, he rests and kicks back like anyone else. He doesn't have a different clock but might have a different way of looking at it.
He's released his third Elbow Grease children's book. They introduce a new character, Chopper. The book is big and fantastic and fun and uses words that allow young readers to use their imagination. He wants to use the books to approach things that some books don't approach at that age range - self worth, facing failure, what to do when you see someone who is more skilled than you. How do you react? Not judging someone because they look different or are a different gender. He wants parents and teachers to have things to talk about without hitting them over the head with the topics.
Cena said normally you do autograph signings and normally that's where you meet people and get the word out but in 2020 the rules have changed. In an autograph signing, you would answer a question or shake a hand so instead, he's been doing video greetings to thank people for buying the book. You never know what that opportunity to interact might meet someone.
Noah brought up Cena's charitable efforts with his donations to Los Angeles Fire Fighters and to Black Lives Matter. He asked Cena what makes him decide he's going to step in and do something. Cena said the BTS Army matched BTS' donation, so he was part of that Army and part of that initiative to match it. He said he can't take the credit away from BTS for donation a million dollars and their fans for matching that in just 24 hours. He said he was blown away by a group of Korean pop music fans wanting to spend their money to help change the world and is humbled to be part of that.
A good, short conversation.
