9 REASONS YOU NEED TO CONSIDER BUYING A CLASSIC CAR

By Kendall Jenkins on 2020-08-31 09:37:00

There are many reasons why classic car enthusiasts prefer classic vehicles over modern vehicles. Beyond the nostalgia factor, car owners enjoy having them for reasons such as reasonable pricing and the lack of required maintenance. If you're considering purchasing a classic car, it's helpful to know some of the benefits of owning one. Here are nine reasons you need to consider owning a classic car.

1. Older vehicles can be simpler to use.

One of the main advantages people enjoy with having classic cars is how simple they are. Modern vehicles tend to have a lot of different buttons to use that may confuse drivers. Classic cars didn’t have as many buttons or gadgets to fumble around with. Additionally, cars made in the ’60s, such as the 1968 Mustang GT 2+2 Fastback, were easier to work on since they didn’t have complicated wiring. 2. Classic cars are lighter.

When you compare cars in the past to cars made today, you'll notice today's cars have gotten bigger over the years. One example is The Mini. It's doubled in weight since it was first created in 1959. The Porsche 911 grew about 100 mm wider, and the Volkswagen Golf grew about 500 m in length. Not only are cars of the past lighter, but they also tend to perform better, and can be more sturdy and durable than modern cars. Nonetheless, modern cars do indeed tend to last longer, which is important to keep in mind.

3. More control

You may consider yourself an expert driver, such as someone who has spent time driving on racetracks before. If that's the case, one advantage of a classic car you might really enjoy is being able to have more control of the vehicle. These cars tend not to have stability control, traction control, or anti-lock brakes installed. The lack of technology in these vehicles gives experienced drivers more freedom to enjoy doing tricks such as drifts, handbrake turns, and burnouts.

4. Classic cars can help improve your driving.

Given that there are viewer driver controls in a classic vehicle, this forces a driver to use their driving skills more. You have to learn things such as threshold braking, throttle control, and how to effectively understeer and oversteer. Having to know these skills results from not having driver aids, such as the ones mentioned in the previous section. As a result of your driving being improved, it gives you a better chance of not getting into a crash and having to use your classic car insurance.

5. Better fuel economy

You might be surprised to learn that classic vehicles with their smaller engines can have a better fuel economy than most modern cars. There have been tests in the past that have proven this. In 1948, the first Morris Minor was being sold in the market. Two years later, a test was conducted on it by a British motoring magazine called The Motor. It found that the vehicle with its 918 cc engine could do 0-60 in just 50 seconds. It also had a fuel consumption that yielded less than 42 miles per gallon. It’s considered an exceptional feat for a car first produced in 1948.

6. Low maintenance

As mentioned earlier, classic cars tend to be easier to work on than modern cars. They're often bought as DIY projects because they're simple enough for someone that's not a trained mechanic to work on. Modern vehicles have many electronics in them now, and running diagnostic tests on them can be somewhat expensive. In contrast, all of the mechanical parts in a vintage vehicle can be stripped and rebuilt. Sensors and electronics in modern vehicles often have to be replaced, which, again, can be more expensive. If you can find the right parts you need, it can potentially be much cheaper to repair a classic car.

7. Older cars are more affordable.

If you're considering buying a new car, it's possible you might have to finance it. Additionally, with interest payments, in the end, you might have to pay a lot more than the selling price. A classic car can potentially be more cost-effective if you plan to restore it yourself. As an example, you might find a 1966 Mustang V-8 couple that only costs $12,000. After you purchase it, you can then find the missing parts you need at your local store, and then rebuild the car, saving you a lot of money you might have spent purchasing a newer car. In addition, insurance with classic cars can be cheaper, particularly if you get one with a company specializing in classic car insurance.

8. Possible appreciation

Cars don’t normally make the best investments. A modern car depreciates the moment you drive it off the car lot. In only a few years, the modern car you purchase will only be worth about half of its original value. With classic cars, it’s possible it may appreciate. If you create an effective plan to restore it to mint condition and properly look after it after you’ve restored it, the vehicle can appreciate in value as it continues to get older. As a result, you can potentially get a profit for the car if you ever decide to sell it.

9. Classic vehicles may get you more attention.

Imagine you're at a car show and you notice two cars arriving at the same time. They're parked right next to each other. One is a fully restored 1965 Chevrolet Corvette, and the other is the newest version of that Corvette. Given it’s rarer to see a 1965 Chevrolet Corvette, it would likely get more attention than the modern version. If you’re a car enthusiast that enjoys competing in car shows, a classic car just might be the vehicle that could help you win over the crowd and the judges.

There are many reasons why people enjoy buying classic cars. From the simplicity of them to the affordability, classic cars can offer many benefits that modern cars can’t. Keep these reasons in mind, and weigh the pros and cons when deciding if your next car purchase should be a classic vehicle.
