MIKE TYSON THINKS WILDER CAN BEAT FURY

By Kendall Jenkins on 2020-07-02 12:03:00

Mike Tyson must be one of the only people on the planet who thinks that Deontay Wilder is capable of beating Tyson Fury. Tyson, as we know, is no stranger to opinions that one could normally file under outlandish but on this occasion, the 54-year-old may indeed have a point worth considering.

It may be hard to get your head around anything other than a Tyson Fury win after their showdown in Las Vegas where the Englishman destroyed Wilder in seven rounds.  But what Mike Tyson is referring to isn’t anything other than the cold hard facts of heavyweight boxing; every heavyweight boxer has a punch that can end the contest no matter what the odds say coming into the bout.

And Wilder for that matter has arguably the most devastating haymaker in the world of boxing. Amazingly, 93.18% of the time, Wilder is able to knock his opponent out which is truly an incredible stat when you consider that the 34-year-old has taken part in 44 professional bouts. The Alabama-born fighter was even able to catch Fury with that same haymaker during their first fight that ended in a draw. Remarkably, Fury was able to get up in time to avoid being counted out. The only person on record so far that has been strong enough to defy the right hand of Deontay Wilder. With that in mind, there is a school of thought that suggests that even if Wilder does land his best on Fury, the Englishman will be able to take it and come back for more.

That is harder to buy into when you take into account that Wilder may not have caught Fury as flush as he could have back in 2018. Indeed, Fury began to fall before Wilder could properly connect and that is probably the reason why Fury is still undefeated today. In fact, it’s easier to side with Mike Tyson on this one and agree that Wilder does indeed have the punching power to win the third fight.

Furthermore, available boxing betting odds on the fight also suggest that with Wilder at a mere 5/2 to win. Sure, he’s the outsider but he may be the best value underdog the world has ever seen, and that is probably what Mike Tyson is trying to get at. What may seem like the most certain likelihood in the world of heavyweight boxing always requires further examination given the power these men have. The bottom line is, if you’ve made it to this level of boxing, you can knock any man on the planet out if given the chance.

Whether Wilder gets the chance to land on Fury is another question as Fury often resembles that of a slippery eel in the ring. The 31-year-old is nigh on impossible to hit and can spend 12 rounds slipping and sliding whilst landing jabs on his opponent. That will at the very least be his game plan when he fights Wilder for a third time as he waits for him to tire before trying to knock him out.

We all know, however, what the great man Mike Tyson says about game plans, "everyone has one until they get punched in the mouth." Don’t take your eyes off this one or hold on to any firm ideas about the outcome.
