CBD for Children: Is it Healthy?

Epilepsy

June of 2018 saw the approval of the first cannabis-derived drug by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which was used to treat two rare and severe forms of epilepsy.

The drug contains highly-purified CBD and is deemed suitable for patients two years and up. Since then, it was proven to treat epilepsy but not without side effects. Researchers observed one or more of the following in clinical trials that ensued:

  • sleepiness

  • elevated liver enzymes

  • decreased appetite

  • rash

  • insomnia

  • diarrhea

  • sleep disorder

  • lethargy

  • infections

These side-effects are relatively tolerable risks, especially when compared to debilitating seizures.

Anxiety

CBD oil has since been tested to aid in the treatment of specific anxiety disorders, as suggested by preclinical evidence. This includes social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Nausea

Researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 22 studies involving children and adolescents and found evidence in line with CBD's capacity to alleviate nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy. Although still lacking sufficient evidence for its effectiveness, CBD is also found to treat neuropathic pain, posttraumatic stress disorder, and Tourette syndrome.

Autism

One of the most extensive clinical trials that study the link between CBD and autism took place in Israel, which involved 120 children and young adults. The CBD oil used in the study contains zero up to low amounts of THC.

CBD for Children: Is it Safe?

CBD or cannabidiol is a substance that is extracted from either hemp or marijuana. It is now available for purchase commercially, and in many forms, from liquid to chewable gummies. It has become a popular treatment option for various health conditions, including those that occur in children.

Most concerns about the use of CBD for children revolves around the lack of extensive testing for its safety and effectiveness. What we have so far is promising research, especially for seizure control. While CBD oil is used for several medical concerns in children, the only condition that it has been approved to use for by the FDA so far is epilepsy.

Bottom line is, It is still best to consult with your doctor before making any decisions about trying new products for your child's health.
