Four major cities where professional wrestling events have been held
1. Atlanta, Georgia
Atlanta, better known in the wrestling community as the home of the former wrestling company known as WCW, has hosted some exciting events before, and since the demise of the rival WWE company in 2001. Immediately, wrestling connoisseurs will remember Hulk Hogan defending the WCW championship against the undefeated Goldberg. They fought for the biggest prize in the competition held inside the Georgia Dome, where more than 40,000 fans joined in supporting their local hero against the most hated wrestler at the time. In addition, this event was simultaneously broadcast on live television.
The Georgia Dome also hosted Wrestlemania events such as the WrestleMania XXVII, where The Rock, John Cena, Undertaker, Triple H, Randy Orton, King Mysterio and TheMiz, among other greats, competed.
The legendary Georgia Dome in Atlanta was demolished in 2017, after 25 years of history.
2. Montreal, Quebec, Canada
There haven't been many wrestling events in Montreal, but the city has hosted some of the most controversial moments in the history of professional wrestling. In 1997, WWE was in the middle of a war with WCW over qualifications, and it was clear that whoever was the loser would be out of business. Local hero Bret 'The Hitman' Hart, who was about to leave for WWE, was defending his title against Shawn Michaels.
The event is known as the Montreal Betrayal or Montreal Screwjob and was an event in the fight between Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels for the World Wrestling Federation Championship. It took place on November 9, 1997. Vince McMahon, had previously agreed with Hart for a starting match against Michaels that would end in disqualification, but the end of the match was changed without notifying Hart so that he would lose the title to Michaels. Referee Earl Hebner called the bout off after Michaels applied the Sharpshooter to his opponent without waiting for Hart to surrender. Thanks to this ploy, Michaels was declared the winner of the bout and the new champion.
3. Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Toronto, like Houston, has hosted two WrestleManias, but in the SkyDome, which can accommodate about 68,000 people. Toronto is arguably the best wrestling city in Canada, but that said, there are two competitions in particular for which the city is best known. First, at the WrestleMania 6, the event held on April 1, 1990 at the SkyDome in Toronto, Ontario. It was the first WrestleMania held outside the United States. At this event, the Intercontinental champion, The Ultimate Warrior, faced the world champion, HulkHogan for the title.
Also held in Toronto was the WrestleMania 18 event, where Hulk Hogan returned after a break of almost 10 years since his departure from WWE, to face The Rock.
4. Madison Square Garden, New York
Madison Square Garden is arguably one of the world's most famous, if not the most famous, venues, but since its renovation, some feel it has lost the magic it once had as a venue for incredible wrestling competitions. Despite that claim, many historians still say that Madison Square Garden in New York is the home of the WWE.
At Madison Square Garden Hulk Hogan faced off against America's most hated man, The Iron Sheik, in a world title classic that led to the birth of Hulkamania. It was also the site of the 1985 opening of WrestleMania and the classic between Razor Ramon and Shawn Michaels in WrestleMania 10. And let's not forget the 2000 Royal Rumble, where Cactus Jack took on Triple H.
Madison Square Garden also hosted the 2008 Royal Rumble, where John Cena made a surprise return. New York, has been and is definitely, an important city for professional wrestling.
