WWE revealed on last night's edition of WWE Backstage that retired NFL star Rob Gronkowski, 30 years old, was "close to signing" with the company. That was storyline as Gronkowski has signed and will debut on the 3/20 edition of Smackdown from New Orleans. Last night's announcement was specifically timed and made so FOX could have the story first and to get some mainstream buzz for the company.
PWInsider.com is told that Gronkowski will be working as an active pro wrestler, not as an employee of the company as an announcer or similar non-wrestling role role. One source described it as a deal similar to Ronda Rousey, bringing a big name from another sport into the company.
Gronkowski is a long-time wrestling fan and close friend of Raw star Mojo Rawley. He got involved in 2017's Andre the Giant Battle Royal, assisting Rawley to get the win at Wrestlemania 33 in Orlando, Florida.
Triple H teased the potential of Gronkoski taking part in Summerslam, set for this August in Boston, MA, where Gronkowski played the New England Patriots, just a few weeks ago on Twitter during Super Bowl week:
Thanks for the invite to the Beach Party @RobGronkowski ... maybe you should come to our party in Boston ... heard it’s the biggest of the summer. @StephMcMahon pic.twitter.com/eRQ8z0UmQI
