The history of WrestleMania
The first WrestleMania was staged by WWE, World Wrestling Federation, on March 31, 1985 at Madison Square Garden. Both world famous Hulk Hogan and Mr. T teamed up with Jimmy Snuka against Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff who were accompanied by Cowboy Bob Orton. Over the last few years the main match has usually been over the WWE World Heavyweight Championship or the WWE Universal championship. But 2019 the main event was for both women’s WWE Championships. Ronda Rousey, Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch competed in a Winner Takes All Thriple Threat match for both the WWE Raw omen’s Champnionship and the WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship. This is the first time in history that the main event has been for a women’s championship title. It’s proof of just how big women’s wrestling is becoming.
WrestleMania Axxess
The week that WrestleMania is held, there is also a professional wrestling fan convention in the same town. This event is usually held from Thursday to Sunday, which is the day of the event. At WrestleMania Axxess you can meet some of the wrestlers, there are autograph signings, meet-and-greets and even matches. The first event happened in 1988 When WWF, now WWE, decided to hold a small festival with The Trump Organization to celebrate WrestleMania IV. 1999 was the year when the event really started to grow. It was the first year that a Saturday pre-WrestleMania event took place and it was called WrestleMania Rage Party. The idea was to celebrate the final WrestleMania of the millennium.
Year 2000, the first true WrestleMania Axxess event was hold at the Anaheim Convention Center. It now included autograph signings and mementos of the wrestlers that are in the WWE Hall of Fame. That year there were even activities where fans could commentate a wrestling match and even enter a ring. The next year the event was expanded even more with numerous activities like areas with special merchandise and special WWE vehicles. 2002 was the year that the event started to run for three days and nowadays it’s four days. From Thursday up until event night on Sunday. Since 2013, NXT matches has been held at the event and since 2017, matches has been held from independent promotions like Evolve and Progress Wrestling. A very exciting part of the convention is the WrestleMania Superstore. This store has “the largest selection of WrestleMania and WWE merchandise under one roof”.
