THE ALVAREZ BOXING FAMILY

By Kendall Jenkins on 2019-10-19 07:16:00

On Saturday 2nd November, Saúl Álvarez will take on Russian boxer Sergey Kovalev at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The bout is set to be an incredible spectacle as the Mexican takes on the light heavyweight number 1 – as ranked by Boxrec. The odds on Canelo vs Kovalev are in favour of Canelo to claim the WBO belt, despite stepping-up two weight divisions, posing the question, is ‘Krusher’ past his peak?

Álvarez has not only dedicated the majority of his life to boxing, after turning professional at the age of 15, but his entire family have too. Canelo is the youngest of eight siblings, with seven of them being boys; his six older brothers became professional boxers.

His more successful brothers include boxers Ramón, Ricardo and Rigoberto. Let’s take a look at the individuals that are making the Álvarez family name a success.

Ramón Álvarez

Unlike his brother Canelo, Ramón took until his 20s to get his first professional fight. At the age of 21, Ramón took on fellow Mexican boxer Agustin Marquez but lost by unanimous decision. Now a little over 11 years later, at the age of 33, Ramón holds a record of 28-8-3 (16 KOs).

Earlier this year in August, Ramón took on American Erislandy Lara in Minneapolis. The American had already fought and lost to Ramón’s brother Saúl back in 2014. Ramón boasted before the event that he was “going for KO” – unlike his brother.

Later on at the weigh-in, it turned out that Ramón was overweight for the category by 4.6lbs, meaning that even if he did win, he would not win the WBA light middleweight title. Even with the weight advantage, ‘Inocente’ lost the bout, in what was the fourth loss by KO of his career.

Ricardo Álvarez

Ricardo was a late bloomer for competing in his first professional boxing match, aged 27-years-old. Although 2008 wasn’t only a significant year because the boxer turned pro, it was also the year when all seven brothers fought on the same card. Although three of the brothers lost that night, Ricardo won by unanimous decision against Iván Orona.

Since then the Mexican has built up a record of 24-3-3 (14 KOs) with his last fight against John Michael Johnson in Texas resulting in the same verdict, win by unanimous decision. Although he has now retired, ‘Dinamita’ had a respectable career.

Rigoberto Álvarez

The oldest of the professional boxing siblings, Rigoberto is now 41-years-old and retired from the sport. He made his debut in 2000 against Ismael Rodriguez and won via knockout. The Mexican continued his success, as he went undefeated for another nine years until he came up against William Gare.

In total, Rigoberto’s career stats ended 27-4-0 (20 KOs). Sadly, his last two bouts ended in defeats, so his career didn't end on the high it had begun with. The boxer can now be proud knowing he managed to claim the WBA World light middleweight title in 2010.

The eldest sibling now watches on as his youngest brother Canelo succeeds in his international boxing endeavours.
