STARRCADE 2019 COMING TO US ON DECEMBER 1ST

By Kendall Jenkins on 2019-10-01 11:49:00

Most of us are too young to fully remember the very first Starrcade event, put on by the one and only Dusty Rhodes originally in the NWA (National Wrestling Alliance) back in 1983!

This year, the WWE will host the event in Duluth, Georgia at the Infinite Energy Center. 2019 will be the third year back after a long, 17-year hiatus of the production. Prior to 2017, the last event was held back in the year 2000 by the WCW.

The top online sportsbooks don’t have any odds for Starrcade because it won’t happen until December 1st and right now everyone is focused on Hell in a Cell. However, tickets went on sale for the fans on September 27th, so you can already book your seats!

Starrcade Rumors & Announcements

Bayley Becky Lynch, AJ Styles, Roman Reigns, Sasha Banks Charlotte Flair, Daniel Bryan, Kofi Kingston, and Seth Rollins are all supposed to be at Starrcade, but it’s difficult to speculate on the storylines and rumors since we have months of build-up to go before the event.

Once Hell in a Cell concludes we might be able to speculate a little more, but for now, let’s look at a couple memorable Starrcade matches of the past.

2018

Let’s look at the most recent iteration first.

Rey Mysterio came out of nowhere to beat not only win in his tag-team match against The Miz and Shinsuke Nakamura with his partner Rusev, but he also took down Shinsuke solo for the United States Championship Belt.

There was no shortage of drama leading up to the event and the top-billed match was nothing short of fantastic, with an eight-woman brawl-fest. The four-on-four match with Bayley, Dana Brooke, Ember Moon, and Sasha Banks vs. Alicia Fox, Nia Jax, Mickie James, and Tamina was brutal, and of course, the Boss ‘N’ Hug-led foursome tapped out the lesser crew in the end. We also saw Bray Wyatt (pre-Fiend) defeat Baron Corbin, not once, but twice.

Ric Flair vs. Lex Luger

The 1988 battle between Flair and Luger was phenomenal. Luger had recently left the Four Horsemen and the two were going toe to toe for an extended period leading up to the event. Their previous match ended in Lex Luger losing due to blood loss, thus Starrcade was set for the rematch.

Lex Luger wasn’t the greatest athlete, but Ric Flair sure made him look the part. Just when it looked like the Torture Rack was going to win Luger the day, his legs gave way and Ric Flair used the ropes to get the pin.

Roddy Piper vs Greg Valentine

The 1983 Dog Collar Match will ever be remembered. Normally, when two wrestlers are tied together, it isn’t that great of a show. This was a grudge-match from hell. Previously, Greg Valentine has smashed Rowdy Roddy Piper in the ear with a bell, and he lost 75% of his hearing as the result. The match went back and forth and is one of the few in history where you actually believe what you are watching. Eventually, Roddy got the win, but Greg still kept attacking him afterward. This may be the most intense match ever!

Sting vs Vader

Sting was at his best when facing Vader – and Ric Flair. In 1992, the pair had met earlier at the Great American Bash and sting needed to get some vengeance on Big Van Vader. Vader moved like a man half his size. Keeping up with Sting and creating a classic showdown of Babyface vs. Heel. Sting suplexed Vader off the ropes then got Vader in a scorpion. But Vader wouldn’t be put away and fought his way back. Vader climbed the ropes when Sting was down and flew with all 400+ pounds off the top rope, but Sting caught him mid-air to powerslam the big man and get the pin.

Will we see any matches in 2019 that become one for the ages? We’ll find out on December 1st.
