WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FRENCH ROULETTE AND AMERICAN ROULETTE?

By Kendall Jenkins on 2019-08-15 15:54:00

The expansion of land-based casino to online casinos have resulted in many variations of traditional games. However, sometimes it can be challenging to differentiate certain games. Roulette is one of the most played games in any kind of casino coming with an abundance of ways for players to enjoy the game. The preferred versions are American Roulette and French Roulette. For novices who are new to the gambling scene, it can take some time to distinguish the difference between the two which is what this article will explain to you.

Tables

This is the biggest difference between the two. An American Roulette table usually is 2.9m x 1.7m and the wheel can be found on the shorter side. The dealer for the game stands next to the wheel, while the players place their bets sitting opposite the dealer.

However, on the other hand, the French Roulette table is much bigger and players sit on the three available sides of the table. It is 3.3m x 1.8m and instead of the one dealer that hosts American Roulette, there are two croupiers for French Roulette as well as a table-umpire that oversees the game. These longer tables used in French Roulette ensure that all players have a good vantage point by having the wheel in the middle and two betting layouts; one on each side.

Betting

For those that have played these variations of Roulette at Unique Casino will already be aware of the difference in the betting layout when staking their money. The French table has the outside bets split between two long lines, whereas the American variation has all the outside bets on the same side as the players would be sitting.

Roulette Rules

Many people believe that the rules for both games are the same, when in fact, they are not. There are some crucial aspects which makes French and American Roulette two entirely different games, however both variations can be incredibly lucrative for players. European Roulette doesn’t fall into this same category as they don’t have any of their own rules.

Difference in Rules

The most notable rule change is zero being the winning number. If that happens in American Roulette then all outside bets are lost outright. Whereas in the French variation, if the zero comes up, then players haven’t immediately lost their stake. Instead, the following two rules apply.

The first of which is ‘En Prison’. This is a straightforward thing to learn. If zero comes up, but you have your money on red, then the money that you have placed on red is then in prison. On the second spin, you will have a chance at winning if red comes up, but if the spins ends with a zero or a black number winning, then the stake is lost.

The second rule is ‘La Partage’, which means splitting. If a zero comes up with this rule, then you will be returned half of your initial stake, while the other half is lost.

Both of the latter rules are hugely beneficial to the player and one of the main reasons why French Roulette is superior to American.
