Parenting is a full-time job that continues far beyond the nine to five office hours. Getting children ready for school, cooking their meals, keeping on top of the laundry, and helping with homework can take up all the available hours in the day. It’s not surprising that most parents feel completely exhausted by the end of the week and never manage to have any time for themselves.
That all important ‘me time’ often feels completely out of reach, but it’s essential to allocate some time in your week to relax and unwind in order to continue being the best parent possible. Indulge in your favorite hobby or pastime, go for a coffee with friends or simply have some quiet time alone, there are many different ways to take care of yourself.
Play Sport
Playing sport is probably the last activity on the list you want to do when energy levels are running low; however, exercise is one of the best ways to boost energy if done on a regular basis. It also releases those all-important endorphins, the feel-good hormones that help relieve stress.
Getting involved with a local team if you want to be sociable, your new found friends will probably become a wonderful support system when you need it most. Running or cycling are great alternative options if you want some time to yourself. Apps like Strava are great for tracking progress and how much time you’ve really spending outdoors. This way you can set goals and achievements for the days and weeks to come.
Have a Date Night
Parents are often so focused on enriching the lives of their children they forget to focus on their partner altogether. It’s important to schedule in quality time together as it’s a great way to unwind. Call in the babysitters and head out for a special meal or even take 15 minutes out of your day to have a romantic walk around the park. You’ll start to feel the benefits of it in no time.
Play Games
A little light-hearted fun unless you have a competitive streak, card games are great for focusing the mind at the end of a stressful day you’d rather forget about. Bring friends round for a poker night or try your luck online on Unibet if they’re not available, it’s a great way to unwind. You might even want to have a go at the children’s video games after they’ve gone to bed.
Read a Book
Run a bath and pick up that book you’ve been wanting to read for months, absorbing yourself in the latest novel is the perfect way to create some headspace and forget about that endless to-do list you’ve got downstairs.
eBook readers are perfect for keeping all your books in one place and save you from lugging an entire library around in your day bag. You can also download a book instantly instead of waiting for it to be delivered or having to pop to the shops. Ideal for parents with little time on their hands.
