Mexican wrestling, or Lucha libre, is an extremely fascinating sport which has spawned many interesting facts over the years. With so long and rich a history as this sport has, it is unsurprising that some strange things have cropped up. Let’s take a look at some of the strangest facts now.

There’s a Mexican Wrestling Slot Game

Online slot games come in every shape and form, so it is really not that surprising that there is a game based around wrestling. With a cast of colourful luchadores and some interesting bonus features, Lucha Legends should be on the “to play” list of every wrestling fan who also dabbles in online games. Its developer Microgaming did a great job transforming the sport into a slots format. If you want to try it yourself, you can find it at NetBet.

Luchadores Keep Their Identities Hidden

Their masks might be some of the most recognisable images in Mexico but very little is known about the men who live underneath them. The masks are kept on at all time and are only removed in dramatic unmaskings in the ring; to lose the mask at any other time could result in the end of a luchador’s career. When the ex-wife of El Hijo de Santos produced photos she claimed to be of his face during their divorce proceedings, his lawyers had to quickly deny that the photos were not actually of him.

You Can’t Bet on the Matches

Lucha libre is an elaborate pageant where the outcome of the match is determined long before the wrestlers step into the ring. It is as much a show of strength and a performance for the audience as it is about the actual wrestling moves. A lot of the popularity of the luchadores can also be attached to the other wrestlers they are currently in a feud with. Due to all of these factors, bets cannot really be placed on the matches. With a predetermined winner every time, a bet on the outcome would most likely be a waste of money.

The Most Famous Luchador was Buried in His Mask

Remember how most luchadores keep their masks on no matter what? This can definitely be said for the most famed luchador of all – El Santo. He had a very long career both in the ring and in Mexican cinema during and afterwards. He is one of the most prominent figures in Mexican pop culture and his legacy still lives on today. El Santo was never unmasked during his career and only took it off in public once; on a public talk show not long before he died. After his death, he was interred in his famous mask – a fitting tribute to one of the greatest wrestlers in Mexican history.

Lucha libre has produced some extremely interesting characters over the years and we can be certain that stranger facts will emerge as we move forward. It is one of the best things to come out of Mexico, so whether you are a fan or not, you should head to a Lucha libre match if you have the chance!
