Last Monday it became official that for the first time ever, a women's match will be the main event of WrestleMania. YouWager, one of the most respected sportsbooks today, will offer betting odds for WrestleMania 35.
The historic event will take place on April 7 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey when WWE Raw Women's Champion Ronda Rousey battles SmackDown Women's Champion Charlotte Flair and 2019 Women's Royal Rumble winner Becky Lynch in a triple-threat match.
WWE made the match even more interesting by giving by Charlotte Flair the SmackDown Women's Championship on the March 26 edition of WWE SmackDown LIVE when she simply got a surprise match against Asuka for no reason and beat the former champ.
Most fans didn't approve the move for several different reasons, particularly because Charlotte Flair keeps getting handed opportunities without earning them, like her inclusion in what should have been a one-on-one match between Ronda Rousey and Becky Lynch at WrestleMania.
Asuka's championship reign was poor, no doubt, her booking was awful and it doesn't help that she has a hard time cutting promos but she still didn't deserve to drop her title that way.
Making Rousey, Lynch, and Flair the headliners at WrestleMania would have been historic in any circumstance, but the fact that their match has been anticipated for months makes it so much better. Having three of the most popular superstars in the company closing their biggest show of the year hasn't happened much lately and they can easily have the best match of the night.
The decision to have Charlotte Flair win the SmackDown Women's Championship wasn't well-received but it proves that the company wants to make this match as big as possible. Becky Lynch has been the most popular superstar in WWE since August and Rousey and Flair have plenty of accolades.
Being the main event matters because over 60,000 fans will watch the show live in New Jersey, along with millions around the world and even though there are big non-WWE wrestling companies like New Japan Pro Wrestling, All Elite Wrestling and Ring of Honor, WWE is still the biggest and there's a reason why WrestleMania is known as The Show of Shows.
Being the main event of WrestleMania means that the whole show is promoted around it and it is considered the highest accolade in the wrestling industry. Closing the show also means that WWE Chairman Vince McMahon thinks you are the company's hottest commodity, someone who can sell tickets, WWE Network subscriptions and merchandise.
For a long time, the idea of women headlining WrestleMania was considered impossible. The company's treatment of women over the years hasn't been the best and for many years the men were referred to as superstars while the women were just Divas and their matches were seen by fans as bathroom breaks. How far have the women come in WWE? WrestleMania 22, in 2006, included a Playboy Pillow Flight between Candice Michelle and Torrie Wilson...
NXT, the popular WWE-owned brand had a lot to do with the company giving women the spotlight. In 2014 women got 10, 15 and 20 minutes to have show-stealing matches in NXT and fans began a #GiveDivasAChance hashtag on Twitter that led to the current Women's Revolution.
In 2016, the term "Diva" was removed and women like Charlotte Flair, Bayley and Sasha Banks were seen as top stars, with the company referring to their female competitors as superstars.
The women's main event at WrestleMania was earned, not given. Ronda Rousey's success at UFC made her a big pop culture star, Becky Lynch is the most popular wrestler in the company and Charlotte Flair has been a consistent performer since her main roster debut.
Rousey, Lynch and Flair hate each other in their on-screen storyline, which will only make this match even better.
