WRESTLECON SUPERSHOW BACKSTAGE NEWS AND NOTES

By Mike Johnson on 2019-04-05 09:27:00

Last night's Wrestlecon show appeared to go off without a hitch, but it was a day from hell for the promoter, Highspots.com.  The show actually underwent 25 (not a typo) changes over the course of the day due to issues with talent travel and more.

Eddie Kingston vs. Masato Tanaka was not originally scheduled to open the show but had to as it was the only match where all the competitors were ready to go present when the show needed to begin.  Kingston broke down after the match because Tanaka was his dream opponent and he never thought he'd have the opportunity.

The original plan last night was to open with Pentagon Jr. & Rey Fenix vs. Arez & Flamita with the idea of giving Arez and Flamita, who are teaming regularly, a big moment.  Instead, due to travel issues and since Pentagon and Fenix needed to go on to MLW and then Impact Wrestling, the decision was made to not wait for Arez to arrive and instead have the Lucha Brothers face each other.  Arez and Flamita instead worked a three-way with Robbie Eagles.

Black Taurus, who was scheduled to compete, was held up at immigration for hours and ended up having to be cut from the show.

Ultimo Dragon, who was slated to be a surprise, was also cut from the show due to a travel issue.  He actually arrived at the building as the match he was slated to work, the mixed eight person tag, was going to the ring.  Dragon offered to go right to the ring, but by then the match had been worked out and he had been removed.  It was originally going to be a ten person tag.

Tajiri was added to the show as a surprise after the Dragon Gate talents had their visas declined.

Wrestlecon looked into adding a STARDOM six woman tag to replace a planned Dragon Gate six man but STARDOM talents had another commitment last night and could not appear.

The start of the show was delayed because an ambulance, which is required by the New York State Athletic Commission, was late in arriving due to NYC traffic.

WWE star Andrade was backstage visiting.

Shane Helms noted on social media that he "begged" WWE to let him appear last night so he had the chance to tag with Jushin Liger and thanked the company and Wrestlecon for allowing it to happen.

Last night's show was legitimately sold out but another headache was that once they arrived in the venue, they realized the seating arrangements needed to be re-designed in order to improve sightlines, so that was another undertaking that had to be rushed through at the last second.
