Supermoon 2019: Why Is It Called A Super Snowmoon?

The night of February 19th was a sight not to be missed by sky watches and selenophiles! That fateful night was a real show to the eyes where we could catch the moon at its full, glorious splendour! The full moon appeared the biggest and brightest of the year. According to NASA, they gave it the name, Super Snowmoon. And there are core reasons behind this name!

We were previously stunned by the Super Blood Wolf Moon Eclipse in January. The moon turned reddish, just like a scene in Twilight! Thanks to the clear sky and advanced telescope which allowed us to catch every moment of the phenomenon! While much of the world has already got the chance to see the biggest full moon, it is not too late to know some info about it! Here’s what you need to know about the Super Snowmoon!

What Is The Super Snowmoon?

A Supermoon is when the moon reaches its full moon phases and at the same time, it is on the point of its orbit when it is the closest to earth! The event rends a larger and brighter moon in the sky. When the moon is at the farthest point of its orbit, it is known as an apogee!

Quick Fun Fact: The Moon’s orbit is not a perfect circle! Since there are gravitational forces from the sun and earth that affects the body, its distance varies every year.

The term snowmoon is a historic name, given to the second full moon of Winter. It was a common practice of Native American Tribes in the US to venerate the Snowmoon. During that time of the year, heavy snow or blizzards usually struck tribes and hence, the full name got the name, Snowmoon.

Supermoons are not just a scientific event for humans. Many around the world attribute superstitions, legends and stories to the Supermoon event. According to the UK urban legends, a supermoon is a time when werewolves will transform into a beast. Some legends say that witches and vampires reach their full potential as well!

Quick Fun Fact: A blood moon is often associated with witchcraft. It was believed that witches would conduct children sacrifices during a blood moon to achieve immunity from fire. A gathering of witches is called a Witches Sabbath.
