3/16 CHIKARA YOUNG LIONS CUP TOURNAMENT XV REPORT

By Joshua Higham on 2019-03-22 14:02:00

CHIKARA held one of their signature tournaments, Young Lions Cup XV, in two parts this past Saturday at their homebase, The Wrestle Factory, in Philadelphia.

The Chikaratopia stream began with a Mr. Touchdown promo.

Stage 1 (Afternoon):

YLC First Round: Boomer Hatfield defeated Jay Sorbet, Lady Frost (replacing an injured Blanche Babish) and Lee Moriarty (who replaced Jaden Valo). Lee Moriarty eliminated both Sorbet and Frost before Boomer gained the advantage and the pin with the Heidi-canrana.

Dasher Hatfield interrupted the post-match promo when Scott Holliday asked Boomer about his father’s recent actions to pump up that his son would win the title no Hatfield has won before.

A trios match featuring The Regime never started as The Closers attacked Juan Francisco de Coronado for failing to pay them. On commentary, Mike Quackenbush mentioned that Juan Francisco de Coronado has been stripped of his Ecuadorian citizenship for tax delinquency.

YLC First Round: Jaden Newman defeated Frantik, Air Wolf and Thief Ant to advance to the next stage. Thief Ant eliminated Frantik, Jaden Newman then eliminated both Air Wolf and Thief Ant.

Missile Assault Man pinned Rory Gulak to gain his second point.

After a short intermission, in an Unsanctioned Chain Match, Lucas Calhoun beat Volgar. There was no referee, so the fans counted to ten for the knockout win.

YLC First Round: Still Life With Apricots And Pears won the four way to advance, surviving Davienne, DL Hurst and Cam Carter. Still Life basically hid on the outside for most of the match while DL Hurst made Davienne tap to a Rings of Saturn and Carter eliminated Hurst after a Spanish Fly. Still Life evaded a Springboard 450 and got a cradle for the win.

After the match, Scott Holliday asked Still Life if Blank had a new muse. Still Life said, no comment and stormed off.

YLC First Round: Ricky South defeated Allie Kat, Brayden Lee and Green Ant to become the last semifinalist. Green Ant eliminated Allie Kat, which actually garnered some boos from the crowd. Brayden Lee pinned Green Ant after a Shooting Star Press. Ricky South pinned Lee after a super piledriver.

Mr. Touchdown pinned Chris Dickinson after a Flea Flicker. The story here is that Dasher Hatfield, reigning as interim Grand Champion, required the official Grand Champion, Mr. Touchdown, to regain three points upon his return from injury before he’d relinquish the championship back to him. Dickinson was picked specifically by Hatfield, because Dickinson has been called Hatfield kryptonite after injuring Touchdown and pinning both Boomer and Dasher in recent months.

After the match, Dasher and Boomer Hatfield came out to congratulate Mr. Touchdown on the win and tell him that he had another challenger already set up for the evening event for Mr. Touchdown to prove himself. Director of Fun Bryce Remsburg balked at the idea of Dasher making matches, but Mr. Touchdown said to do it.

And that ends Stage 1.

Stage 2 (Evening):

YLC Semi-Final: Boomer Hatfield pinned Jaden Newman following a Frankensteiner.

YLC Semi-Final: Still Life With Apricots And Pears defeated Ricky South after countering the super piledriver and getting a jackknife pin. Ricky South received please come back chants.

Air Wolf beat Cam Carter in 7:22. This was a Magic Move match, where if either competitor hits a particular move, the crowd wins a prize. Cam Carter connected with a 450 splash to send the crowd home with a commemorative poster.

After the match, Air Wolf hyped up the rematch of last year’s Rey de Voladores final between himself and A-Kid at Once Upon a Beginning on April 5.

The Colony (Fire Ant, Worker Ant, and Thief Ant) defeated The Creatures of the Deep (Merlok, Hermit Crab, and Cajun Crawdad) when Fire Ant pinned Crawdad after Beach Break.

F.I.S.T. (Tony Deppen and Travis Huckabee) defeated Cornelius Crummels and Sonny Defarge to gain their third point. They will challenge for the Campeonatos de Parejas at Fright Night on April 27 in Pocono Summit, PA.

Grand Championship: Dasher Hatfield made his 5th defense as Interim Grand Champion, defeating Solo Darling.

YLC XV Tournament Final: Still Life with Apricots and Pears made Boomer Hatfield pass out to the Venus Fly Trap to win the Young Lions Cup.

After the match, Blank joined Still Life with Apricots and Pears at the interview set and claimed that Still Life was no longer his masterpiece after what Penelope Ford did to them at National Pro Wrestling Day.

Before the main event, a video aired, announcing King of Trios is returning this fall. This year, they’re heading to Reading, PA, the weekend of October 1-3.

Mr. Touchdown defeated Icarus to earn the third point. Afterward, Dasher Hatfield came to the ring and told Icarus that he had a job to do and failed. Icarus hit Mr. Touchdown with another Blu-ray as Dasher refused to relinquish the title belt back to Mr. Touchdown. Touchdown tried to appeal to Dasher, but Dasher hit him in the face with the title. This caused Director of Fun Bryce Remsburg to order a Ladder Match for the undisputed Grand Championship at Once Upon a Beginning on April 5 in Jersey City as his final act as Director of Fun.

Notes: Commentary was handled by Mike Quackenbush with a rotation of Doc Diamondfire, Scott Holliday, Jason Heat, and Green Ant joining him. Kris Levin, Betsy Ross, Chris Bankos, and Bryce Remsburg were your referees. Mark Adam Haggerty has taken over the mantle of emcee and ring announcer. One of the stories on commentary was a growing frustration among the referee staff.
