Wrestling fans know their favorite wrestlers go through a grueling physical test for entertainment value.  Flailing limbs, powerful moves and a litany of props can inflict great physical damage on the competitors. Many people do not give professional wrestling the credit it deserves, but there is no denying that the injuries in wrestling are real and frequent. So, it is important that wrestlers can recover their physical strength and well-being in time for the next event.

In this article, we will look at a variety of methods famous wrestlers use to recover their health and strength after a long day in the ring.  Some of these wrestlers take methods from other athletes and others are on the cutting edge of sports recovery.

Before we get into the nitty-gritty, it is important to emphasize the massive risk wrestlers take to entertain their fans.  In the WWE, wrestlers have to purchase their own medical insurance because they are contract workers. Fortunately, the WWE will cover the cost of injuries in the ring, but the training session can be grueling and many wrestlers injure themselves in preparation for big events.

According to USA Wrestling, one of the best ways to prevent injuries is to build recovery periods into your training.  While the advice is directed at amateur wrestlers, professional wrestlers also have to consider the health risk of non-stop and intensive training.  Allowing your body to recover after difficult workouts can reduce strain on your body and limit the amount of chronic pain a wrestler suffers from.

Lex Luger suffered a horrific career-ending injury, but he has managed to rehabilitate himself to a surprising level.  In 2007, Luger was temporarily paralyzed due to a nerve impingement in his neck. For a month after the initial paralysis, the former wrestling superstar was in a quadriplegic state.  However, after antibiotic treatments, Luger made a recovery in several years and returned to work at the WWE on their Wellness Policy.  Luger’s own experience informed his opinions on the need for wrestlers to be more conscious about their health and the risks they take when they enter the ring.

Under the WWE’s updated Wellness Policy, wrestlers are now submitted to cardiovascular stress tests in order to ensure they are fit for the ring.  This preventative measure can not only stop unfit wrestlers from suffering in the ring, but it can detect health problems that might persist outside of the ring.

One newer recovery method is to use CBD oil.  Professional wrestler Dustin Poirier has said that he uses CBD oil in order to recover and prevent further injuries.  Poirier uses it throughout his training regimen and doubles his use on days in which he is sparring.

The positive health and recovery effects of CBD oil are making waves in the sports and medical communities.  And, hemp has recently been legalized in the United States, so we should expect to see more athletes use and promote CBD oil as it further expands in the market.  Companies such as NORDIC OIL are expecting to see increased partnerships with athletes and other sports organizations.

CBD oils and other marijuana products can relieve pain, but some of wrestling’s most gruesome injuries do take time to heal.  Neck and back injuries plague many wrestlers, and these injuries can be the downfall of a great wrestling career.

The Undertaker had a unique solution to one of his injuries that may not be advised by many medical professionals.  When The Undertaker broke his cheekbone, he simply put on a now infamous mask to protect himself from the injury and return the ring.  In the typical showman style of wrestling, he was able to incorporate the mask into his character and parlay his injury into further fame.

All in all, wrestling can be a grueling sport, but there are many ways to prevent injuries, some safer than others.  Professional and amateurs would be wise to pull from some of the safer techniques in order to prevent and recover from injuries.
