Making a New Year’s resolution is easy. Sticking to it is the tough bit. Whether you want to get fit, cut down on drinking or ditch the fags, here are 7 top tips from bgo.com for keeping your New Year’s resolution in 2019.

1.      Write it down.

You’re more likely to take your resolution seriously if you get it down on paper. Write it on post-it notes to stick around your house or office to remind you of your goal. This will help to keep you motivated as you go about your day.

2.      Avoid temptation.

Don’t set yourself up to fail. Avoid the people, places and things which are likely to make you break your resolution. Want to give up alcohol? Steer clear of the pub. Cutting down on sugary snacks? Keep your biscuit tin empty. Sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people leave the door of temptation wide open.

3.      Team up with mates.

Sticking to a New Year’s resolution is easier if you’re doing it with a friend or partner. Not only will it bring out your competitive side, but it will give you someone to lean on in moments of weakness, someone who really knows what you’re going through. You might be surprised to find that offering support to them helps keep you on the right track too.

4.      Find distractions.

Boredom can easily lead you to fall back into old habits, especially if you’re giving up junk food or quitting smoking. Take up a hobby, spend more time with the family or arrange a catch up with old mates to keep busy. You’ll find that having fun and being social will also give you a more positive outlook on life in general, helping you stay motivated and stick to your New Year’s goal.  

5.      Reward yourself.

Treat yourself when you’re doing well. Once you’ve stuck to your new gym routine for a whole month, splash out on new trainers or gym gear. If you’ve not touched a cigarette for so many weeks, use the money you’ve saved by not smoking to do something cool. How about spinning some slots, paintballing or signing up to a cocktail-making masterclass?     

6.      Share your success.

Post about your achievements on social media or, better yet, create your own blog. Blogging is a great way to talk through your struggles and share your success with other people aiming for the same goal. You can also keep yourself motivated by flicking back through your previous blog posts to see how far you’ve come.

7.      Move on from minor slips.

We’re all human. We all make mistakes. If you have a little hiccup or moment of weakness, don’t let that be the reason to give up your resolution completely. In fact, use that minor setback for motivation. Ask yourself why you gave in and write down exactly how you felt afterwards. Remind yourself of this whenever you feel tempted to break in future.
