TYSON FURY PRIMED TO TAKE ON DEONTAY WILDER

By Kendall Jenkins on 2018-08-03 08:55:00

Former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury this week revealed his team are in talks with representatives of current champ Deontay Wilder with an aim to setting up a blockbuster winter 2018 meeting in the US.

The 29-year-old Manchester man has featured only once since dethroning former ruler Wladimir Klitschko in Germany back in 2015. That was an uninspiring fourth-round stoppage win over little-known Macedonian Sefer Seferi, who exited the ring that night with a 23-2-0 record.

With rumors flying around in the industry suggesting Anthony Joshua declined to fight Wilder in a unification bout – or at least made hard work of negotiations – Fury told followers he would go to America and meet big-punching Wilder head-on to restore British pride. The American and his 98% knockout average were keen on the idea and the pair are now putting the finishing touches to a contract that would see them share a ring in November or December.

That news has whipped fight fans into a frenzy and they have been joined by bookmakers, who are falling over themselves to offer their views on the outcome. Punters looking to get in early and secure the value will find Fury an odds-on favorite in the latest boxing betting.

Let’s take a look at what both men bring to the table…

Tyson Fury may have suffered from extended bouts of inactivity and had his fair share of personal problems to deal with in recent times, including a bout of depression, but he remains an undefeated former world champion who never lost his title in the ring. The 6ft 9in Englishman has won all 26 outings so far, with 19 opponents failing to hear the final bell.

He wasn’t given a chance heading to Germany for the Klitschko match but made a mockery of the pre-fight odds, beating the long-term king of the heavyweight division with ease, even boxing with his hands behind his back at one point.

If Tyson Fury is the boxer of the two there’s no doubt Deontay Wilder rates as the puncher. The 32-year-old from Alabama, USA has a stunning CV reading 40 fights, 40 wins, 39 KOs.

The only man to go the distance with The Bronze Bomber was Bermane Stiverne but that was over three years ago and he downed the same opponent inside a round during a November 2017 rematch.

Wilder may be America’s answer to a heavyweight saviour but he is not without his critics, either. The 6ft 7in orthodox has been accused of being amateurish, crude and just plain clumsy. He has found himself behind on the scorecards more than once in his career already, needing that incredible punching power to get him out of trouble.

The build-up promises to be as thrilling as the contest itself.
