MAKING YOUR WEBSITE MORE USER FRIENDLY

When you have a website that you want to put up online, you obviously want it to be seen otherwise there would be no point having it in the first place. However, when people do see your site, you need to ensure they actually like what they see rather than immediately closing the site. This means making your site user friendly and attractive for your visitors, which is pretty simple if you follow some basic rules.

Whether they are going on a shopping website or using a phone number lookup site, web users do not want to spend ages trying to work out where to go or what to do. Everything has to be obvious and simple so that your website visitors can do what they came onto your website to do and then get on with their own tasks. The last thing they want is to spend hours trawling around and trying to find what they want – which is why most will simply head elsewhere if your site is not user friendly.

Tips to make your site more user-friendly

When creating your website, one of the things you have to do is put yourself in the shoes of your website visitors. If you were going on that site, what would you want to see? Make a list of everything that comes to mind, as this will come in useful when you are creating the site or discussing it with a web designer if you plan to use one.

Making the layout simple is a key part of creating a user friendly site, as this is something that will help to keep the user on your site rather than them heading elsewhere. Tabs should be located in a clear location and should be easy to spot. Your site should not be too cluttered, as this will make it harder for your website visitors to get to where they want to go on the site. Make sure that your site loads quickly, as this will also put users off when they try to click on links and nothing happens.

Another thing to bear in mind is that having reams and reams of content without any images is very hard on the eye. Not many website visitors will want to read through paragraph upon paragraph of text to find out information. Instead, make all website copy succinct and break it up with headings and bullet points. This makes it far easier for your visitors to skim to the information they want rather than getting frustrated with information they are not looking for. You should also make sure you use some high quality images on the site. This not only helps to attract the attention of your visitors but will also help to break up the monotony of the text on the page.

Finally, make sure that all images and content on your site are of excellent quality, as this makes a huge difference. While this may not necessarily affect how user friendly the site is, it will affect how useful it is to your visitors.
