VARIOUS TYPES OF PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARDS

By Kendall Jenkins on 2018-05-22 08:27:00

Printed Circuit Boards or PCBs are an integral part of, almost, all the electronic products available in the market whether they are meant for domestic usage or industrial usage. Without the printed circuit board; neither of your electronic gadgets will function. Since these printed circuit boards are used in almost all the electronic products; different types and designs of printed circuit boards exist in the relative industry. The type of printed circuit boards, used in a particular electronic product, vary according to the kind of device. Let us discuss some of the major types of printed circuit boards:

  • Single-sided Printed Circuit Board

Single-sided board are the most basic and one of the easiest to create. In fact, when creating a single-sided printed circuit board is equivalent to creating a simple board. These boards are much cheaper as compared to another type of boards. Single-sided PCBs have a single layer of base material and one end of the same is coated with a thin layer of metal. Mostly copper is used for her. These boards have components on one side and the other side consists of all wirings.

It is clear that the single-sided printed circuit boards are used in electronic devices where simple circuitry is needed. These boards are not able to handle any kind of complex tasks.

  • Double-sided Printed Circuit Board

As clear from the name, double-sided printed circuit boards have both sides available for the components. Designing this board is difficult as compared to the single-sided board. Moreover, the double-sided PCB is small and compact as compared to the single-sided PCB.

Circuits present on one side of the double-sided board can be connected to the circuits present on the other side of the board. The major disadvantage that comes up with double-sided printed circuit boards is that it suffers from the high amount of noise when the signal travels between the conductors.

  • Multi-layer Printed Circuit Board

These are also known as sandwiched boards as different layers are put on top of each other, connected through plated-holes. It has at least three layers of conductive material. Assembling these boards is quite a tedious task and required the aid and assistance of computer assisted software in it. If we compared the multi-layer printed circuit board with the double-sided printed circuit board; then their disadvantages are pretty much the same, however, the number of advantages of the multi-layer printed circuit board is much higher as compared to the double-sided one.

There multi-layer PCBs are also known as rigid boards as the material used in the board is, generally, fiberglass which is very hard and prevents the board from bending or twisting.

  • Flexible Boards

These boards are constructed using plastic flexible plates. This flexible material allows the printed circuit board to take the shape of the electronic product in which they are used. Flexible boards are mostly used in mobile phones, calculators etc.

Rigid and flexible boards can be combined in order to create a rigid-flex board. These are the 4 basic types of printed circuit boards that are present in the relative industry. Although several other forms do occur these types are used majorly.
