FOUR THINGS THAT MAKE A WRESTLING MATCH EXCITING

By Kendall Jenkins on 2018-05-11 08:38:00

Wrestling is a popular sport with millions of fans around the world. While it may not be a part of the pop culture anymore like it was in the 90’s, it is still massive with a good fan following.

It is all about storytelling in and outside the ring. If you are new to wrestling and wonder what makes a wrestling match exciting then you have landed on the right page. Given below are some qualities that can take a match a notch higher.

1. The Character

Wrestlers are basically characters that play gimmicks. The success of a wrestler largely depends on how well a character is accepted by the audience. For example, we can see The Undertaker, who is loved by people and has been performing for around 2 decades.

Many say that The Undertaker is Vince McMahon’s favorite character and for a reason. He is unique and apparently comes with super powers. But, not all characters are equally famous.

For a match to be exciting, both the characters in the ring should be popular with a connect with the audience. Remember the famous CM Punk vs John Cena match from Money In The Bank where Punk walked away with the belt? It was so popular due to the characters that meshed so well with each other and put on a classic.

2. The Storytelling

Wrestling is a lot about storytelling, in and out of the ring. We have faces (good guys) and heels (bad guys) and they fight each other for a reason. If a storyline is not good, audience will not be in a match.

Remember the classic Austin vs McMahon storyline? It was Austin against the authority and the whole audience was with Austin making it one of the most successful storylines in the WWE ever.

But a story has to be told inside the ring as well. Bad guys cheat and good guys often play the underdogs. This is important for the success of a match.

3. The Actual Wrestling

At the end of the day it is wrestling and wrestlers must deliver in the ring by putting a good match. Some great examples include Bret Hart vs Stone Cold from Wrestlemania where the two put a five star match and the fans instantly fell in love with them even giving them a standing ovation.

The match should have exciting and a good finish. Most fans do not like it when a match ends in a disqualification or has no clear winner. The audience has a strong voice today, and if you have any doubts then watch Lesnar vs Goldberg from Wrestlemania XX where the audience totally booed the match.

4. The Audience

Audience can make or break a match. It does not matter how good the in-ring action is, if the audience is silent, the match would appear to be boring.

Audience can elevate a match just by giving a good reaction. A perfect example of this would be The Rock vs Hulk Hogan from Wrestlemania 18 where the crowd totally went crazy for the two superstars. Similarly, there are examples where the audience paid no attention to the performers and booed them. A good example would be most matches involving Roman Reigns, who the audience seems to have rejected.

If these four qualities are present in a match then it is bound to be a success. You can look for such matches to know what wrestling really is. Many say that wrestling has changed now due to the commercial aspect and trying to find new sponsors, such as LintechTT, but wrestlers still put classics on and off.
