COLLEGE BASEBALL RANKINGS: FLORIDA TOPS THE LIST

By Kendall Jenkins on 2018-04-05 07:00:00

Florida made a return to the No.1 spot in the D1Baseball Top 25 rankings, ending Oregon State’s run of three weeks in the top position.

The University of Florida’s Gators opened the season at No.1 and spent the first three weeks enjoying their position there, before slipping down to No.2 in Week Four.

But, before you return to your online blackjack game, the team has yet to lose a series this weekend, and are now riding a winning streak spanning six games -with all six of these runs coming in games they’re playing against opponents who have ranked in the Top 10.

After they shut out their Florida State rivals midweek, Florida managed to outscore then No. 8’s, Vanderbilt, with 26 - 8 in a commanding sweep of three games this weekend.

Oregon’s Steep Drop Down

The team from Oregon State fell three spots to the No. 4 position after a remarkable series loss to Utah, who entered the weekend with a record of 4 - 19. The Utes began the season 0 - 13, while Oregon State started at 13 - 0, but OSU’s flashy pitching allowed them to rack up 24 runs in three games against Utah over the weekend.

Ole Miss and Stanford Up One Spot

Stanford and Ole Miss each move up one position, to No. 2 and No. 3 respectively, after they bounced back from losses when the series opened to wins this weekend. Ole Miss took two of three at home from Arkansas, placed at the No. 5 position, and the latter remained in place after a week of 2 - 2, capped by the second straight road series loss they’ve experienced against a Top 5 opponent.

Indiana’s in the Top 10

Indiana made its entrance in the Top 10 after a week of 4 - 0, and climbed one position up to 10th place. Other notable teams to have risen in the rankings and performed at their peak this week include East Carolina, who moved up four spots to No. 12 after they won their series against Wichita State, and Duke, who rose five spots, getting to No. 14 after improving to a score of 9 -3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Tournament, or ACC. They tied with No. 8s, NC State, for the most excellent league record.

Upheaval in the Rankings’ Bottom Half

There was serious disruption in the rankings’ bottom half, with five teams dropping out and 5 new teams entering.

Southeastern Conference Baseball Tournament, SEC, upstarts Missouri and Georgia leapt into the rankings at Nos. 16 and 18, respectively. The Bulldogs managed to improve to 7 - 2 in the league, after enjoying a series win against Texas A&M University, while the Tigers went on to win a big road series at Auburn.

Oklahoma appeared in the rankings at No. 20 after they swept their second straight Big 12 series, this last being against Baylor. Louisiana, the leader of Conference USA, made its debut for the season at No. 22, and the Missouri Valley Conference powerhouse, Missouri State, came in at No. 23.
