5 TYPES OF GEARBOXES AND WHERE THEY ARE USED

Gearboxes are set of gears combines to alter torque and speed in a machine. They are used in a variety of objects such as cars, helicopters, agricultural equipment, gates, elevators etc., and can be be both automatic or manually operated. Most of the gearboxes are manufactured from steel, brass, iron or aluminium.

Gearboxes are used in a number of different fields which is why various kinds of industrial gearboxes are created, each working on a different mechanism, features and task.

Here are 5 types of gearboxes that are commonly used in various applications:

1.Planetary Gearbox
This type of gearbox has a central gear (sun gear) that is used to provide torque to the planet gears (the gears revolving around the sun gear). Both these gear types are embedded in a bigger gear called the ring gear. This type of gearbox promotes endurance and accuracy and it comes with a number of mounting options such as flange-mounted, shaft and foot.

Used In: Clocks, car mirrors, lunar calendars, turbine engine, toys, 3D printing, lifts and cranes.

2.Worm Gearbox

In this type of gearbox, the worm gear (screw like gear) meshes with another worm gear that looks like a spur gear. Their functionality is to provide output power of 90 degrees. They are known for their precision and also require less maintenance compared to other gearboxes. Moreover, they help to reduce speed between the axis shafts and also increases torque.

Used In: Conveyor belts, elevators, gates and tuning of guitars etc.

3.Bevel Helical Gearbox

This gearbox is mounted on a perpendicular shaft and provides a 90 degree rotary angle. The gear ratio of this gearbox varies from 3:2 to 10:1. They’re silent and with curved shaped teeth and a cone like surface, they’re able to lift heavy loads by producing large amount of thrusts.

Used In: Quarry industry, mining equipments and in heavy duty sectors.

4.Coaxial Helical Inline Gearbox

This gearbox is known for its accuracy, endurance and quality when it comes to reducing speed and carrying a heavy load. Since, it is designed to lift huge loads, the gears and shaft are embedded in hardened cases for extra durability.

Moreover, the steel used is tempered steel to ensure that friction is minimal. Used In: Construction, tank fabrication, automobiles, heavy duty load carrying, mining etc.

5.Skew Bevel Helical Gears

This gearbox has oblique shaft and helical gears that offer strength and maximum rigidity. It involves two helical cylindrical stages and is built on a strong monolithic structure that makes it easier for the application to carry extremely heavy loads.

Used in: Moving heavy loads.
