HAS UK WRESTLING RETURNED TO THE RING AT LAST?

Wrestling in the UK Is Quietly on the Way Up, Get In on the Bottom Floor

From humble beginnings, the UK scene is gradually spreading. With solid talent involved, now is the moment to get to grips with British Strong Style.

We can all remember the golden years of UK wrestling. The Seventies and Eighties saw some truly unforgettable names step into the ring to do battle. Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks, Kendo Nagasaki and Damo Sazuki to name a few. But since the Nineties and the arrival of massive budget American firms, namely WWE and their previous competitor, WCW, British wrestling seemed to have taken a back seat, if not disappeared entirely. However, a new generation of young heels and faces are bringing it back. From grassroots shows in venues around the country, a new era of British wrestling is being ushered in.

Perhaps the most important feature of UK wrestling today is the style: British Strong style. This differs to the standard style of many American wrestlers, in that it requires the wrestlers to actually take the hits. The key, apparently, is to hit the hard parts hard and the soft parts soft. The result is a style that, when seen in the flesh, is every bit as exciting as any sports event.

British Strong Style Is Here

And the participants couldn’t be more enthusiastic. Wrestling gyms and clubs have sprung up across the country, helping to promote this new sporting event. There’s no shortage of interest, and the number of signups is truly impressive. This year seems to be a particular golden age for the scene. A number of events around London have showcased some truly impressive talent, with the perfect balance of sporting prowess and drama. The whole affair is taken quite lightheartedly, and the atmosphere is fantastic, unlike a casino online. People take it seriously, but not so seriously that they can’t see the inherent ridiculousness of the whole business. Where you may have low expectations for a grassroots american wrestling audience, the UK equivalent is a surprisingly diverse mix.

And it would be unfair not to mention some of the clubs that have been going for some time now. Under some railway arches in Bethnal Green, heart of the East End, wrestlers such as the Fabulous Bakewell Brothers have been wowing audience with their high flying styles for some time. UK wrestling may be on the way up, but we can’t forget that for some, the party never ended.
